2022 costume wrap-up and 2023 plans

I want to do my wrap-up today instead of a regular post. I may still do a mini update post later today.

So as usual let’s start out by seeing what I said I wanted to make in 2022 back in December 2021.

1. Finish Utena – YES!
2. Lady Jessica – YES!
3. Padme’s Packing Gown – YES!
4. New Leia Dapper Day Look – YES!
5. Endor Leia – nah
6. Jedi Training Leia – nah
7. A New Belle – nah
8. Anne Boleyn – nah

Half is not bad. Ok let’s look at what I made in 2022.

1. Utena

Finished this up Jan 2022. And almost a year later I still only have a few iphone photos of it. Argh. Chase is finishing up my sword and hopefully I can finally have some decent photos of this when we do my now thrice-delayed white backdrop photoshoot (trying to do it christmas weekend)

2. Dapper Day Leia

For our disney trip this year. I don’t love it as much as my bespin dapper dress but it was fun to be “classic” Luke Han and Leia for dapper day this year. Another one I can’t wait to get shot on the white backdrop.

3. Marvel Outfit

A repeat of the Stitch knit 2 piece outfit I made last year, but a lot more work went into this one because I drew 24 — or was it 28? – Marvel characters, put them all together in a repeat pattern and had it printed it on spoonflower. So its my art on an outfit I made, pretty fun. I want to do another one, I need a star wars one now.

4. New Minnie Ears

I made 4 new pairs of Minnie Ears this year. The Muppets and Ariel pairs were pretty straight forward but the 2 Padme ones were stupidly work extensive to the point I probably shouldn’t have bothered but oh well I enjoyed making them.

5. Wandavision Spirit Jersey

My oft-copied Wandavision spirit jersey. I still really love it and wear it pretty regularly. Disappointing to see so many people outright copy it without even a link back to me.

6. Chase’s Luke costume

Still pretty jazzed about how this turned out. It all went together pretty easily – except having to piece the leather – and he looked great in it.

7. Mods for Chase’s Duke Leto jumpsuit

I did not want to make a jumpsuit from scratch for this, so he bought 2 identical grey cotton jumpsuits and I modified them. Took in the first one to fit better and change the collar, and then used the second one to create the ribbed panels for the sleeves and legs of the first suit.

8. A giant Burger for Chase’s Gene costume & my Bob costume

He bought a cheap costume version that looked awful so I made a better one. The straps ended up a little too long so it needs some tweaks before he wears it again next year (and he does plan to wear it again next year)
There was absolutely no sewing involved in my Bob costume so I’m just throwing it in here for completeness’ sake. Well I take that back, I sewed an elastic strap around the fake mustache. Does that count?

9. Padme Packing Gown

I’ve still got some repairs and tweaks I need to do to this that I still haven’t done post-dragoncon – fixing the buttons on the cuffs and rigging up the armbands another way. But still going to be shooting this on the backdrop soon for more photos, those things aren’t dire for a photoshoot.

10. Lady Jessica

Ok so I did a different Lady Jessica costume than I referenced in my 2021 post but it still counts. Decided to do this one after I couldn’t find blue fabric I liked for the other and this one matched Chase’s armor anyway. Yeah I only made 2 costumes for myself for Dragoncon this year because Padme and Jessica were both beasts with a lot of required handwork, so didn’t have time for much else.

11. Haunted Mansion Dress

A 1 day build challenge I did in October. The main fabric were some Haunted Mansion bedsheets, the darker fabric was a basic HM wallpaper fabric I dyed darker. I haven’t gotten to wear it anywhere… I’m thinking about taking parts of it apart and redoing it — namely taking the darts out of the front panel and putting in princess seams to make it fit better and taking the hem out and doing it by hand. Who knows.

12. Half-finished wedding Leia

And finally of course there’s the current project that I really don’t think is going to get done before the end of the year. But Ive been working on this thing for 3 months so I’m including it. I’ll talk more about this week’s progress in a second post.

Ok so it wasn’t as bad a turnout as I thought, even though I only really have 4 finished costumes for myself this year (5 if you count Bob.)

OK NOW 2023 plans and yall I really have not thought past the thing I’m starting after wedding Leia so everything is really just listing some things I kinda thought about and maybe I’ll do them?

1. Finish Wedding Leia
(duh)

2. Rebels Leia

I’ve had this bouncing around my “want to make” list for a couple of years and it’s now the next project after wedding Leia I SWEAR

3. Nadja – What We Do In the Shadows

I dunno which Nadja outfit but at the moment I’m leaning towards the red striped look. Ash is going to be Guillermo, trying to convince Chase to do Laszlo.

4. Something Star Trek
I have 3 different things I’m thinking of doing and I don’t know what.

I really love Chapel’s white outfit from Strange New Worlds. It’s a contender but it means I have to make pants which I don’t really want to make pants.
Other options are a TOS skant which I’ve been wanting to do for ages, I have the pattern, just need fabric but I can’t even decide what division I want to do.
And then I’d love to do something from Lower Decks but… argh I don’t know too many choices.

5. Breha Organa – Kenobi

I was trying to figure out if I could squeeze this in for Dragoncon this year but alas I am no longer that kind of cosplayer. So I’d like to do it next year.

6. Either Satine or a Padme

I’d really love to do this Satine costume or another Padme but not sure I’ll have the time/budget for it next year if I do Nadja and Breha. Will have to see how next spring starts shaping up.
Which Padme? At the moment it’s between the Ep 2 pilot disguise or the Tatooine poncho. Still not digging into Loyalist even though it’s the 20th anniversary of mine next year LOL

7. Endor Leia
Keeping her on the list because I have the material, I just need to do it.

8. MOM Scarlet Witch

I reaaaaaaaally want to update my Scarlet Witch to the MoM version. I say update but it would be an entirely separate costume. I asked for the fabric for christmas so… we’ll see?

Guess I should mention we are not doing Disney next year. So I don’t have to dedicate time to making random disney trip outfits or ears I come up with. I can just steady work on costumes all year until Dragoncon. Kinda thinking about going to Huntsville Comic Expo in April. We’ll see.
