My Costume History, Day 159: Glimmer from She-Ra, My Costume History, Day 159: Glimmer from She-Ra, made for Dragoncon 2013 Chase & I got to be part of a big He-Man/She-Ra group. The idea was to do the characters in a realistic/GoT style. And I picked... the bright pastel pink and purple character to try to translate into GoT vibes LOL I started out making a bodice out of cotton & canvas, the outer layer is some purple suede I picked up at Tandy, and I added some art nouveau-esque embroidery to the side panels. The front “armor” panel Chase made of worbla. We carried that embroidery motif I did on the bodice onto the hard pieces - it’s repeated on chest armor, belt and shoulder pieces. The shoulders are also worbla, and snap onto the straps of the top. The belt is leather with worbla details. The gauntlets are wet-formed leather. I made the briefs & leggings out of a milliskin I dyed, and added embroidery down the side. The boots were a pain, trying to cover them in this thick purple suede. We made the front section out of worbla, though we could not get it to stay in place over the ankle curve. After Dcon I just cut it in half so I just wouldn’t have to fight with it anymore! The tiara is heat-formed plastic with worbla details, & my wig is from Arda - it was originally pink, but I dyed it lavender. I love that in some areas you can still see some pink so it’s got some dimension to it! I waffled on the skirt. Did I want a skirt like the action figure or no like the cartoon? I made it removable so I could do either. I took some silk gauze and dyed it a gradient, then let it dry crinkled up. Gathered up a long strip and velcroed it to the back side of the belt, cut it into shape and beaded it. Did the cape the same way - it attaches to the inside of the bodice with a snap. Was really happy with how those parts came out so I never wore it without the skirt! Chase made my staff and it does light up! Childhood goals! LOL Our group was awesome, but sadly we’ve never worn these together again. I did take Glimmer out again to GMX later that year, but that was all. It’s not in great shape anymore, but nothing so bad I couldn’t clean it up to wear again if anybody wants to get the band back together...
My Costume History, Day 158: Trillian from Hitchhi My Costume History, Day 158: Trillian from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, made for Dragoncon 2013 I had wanted to do this Trillian costume from the 05 movie since it came out - and I had wanted Chase to do a Zaphod costume since we started dating in 2005. It took me 8 years to convince him LOL For my Trillian, I started with one of those onesie animal costume patterns. I made it out of some blue cotton I had on hand (RIP Team Zissou costume I never did), then took it in to fit, drew my seam lines on, and cut it apart to use as a pattern. I used a blue terry cloth fabric from Joann, and for each panel, I backed it in the cotton fabric piece from the pattern. It gave the terry cloth a little more stability. To assemble it, I did lapped seams, then top stitched each one with a big zig-zag to create that “piped” look at each seam. Made the cuffs separate, added the quilted stitching to them all, then sewed them to the suit and tacked them back into place to give them the rolled back/up look. Also made the belt and quilted it. The patch I made out of a piece of the cotton and terry cloth sewn together, and embroidered it on. If you notice it’s sticking up funny in the photos? I never finished sewing it on all the way. I kept meaning to fix it... and I finally did for Dragoncon 2021 LOL The shirt is one I had - I had previously used it for Zatanna. Worked great for this. Bought the wig from Arda and wore some Converse with it. Also made Chase’s Zaphod jacket (used a pirate jacket pattern), and altered a pair of pants for him. Had so much fun finally getting to wear these together!! And Trillian became my default late night Dragoncon costume for years to come. It’s so comfy and actually not too terribly hot. When we brought them back in 2021, I restyled my wig to be curlier - but I only have a mirror photo of it in the hotel room. Maybe we’ll bring these back this year and I can get some proper photos with the re-styled wig! (Also funny story - a friend of mine unfamiliar with HHGTTG told another friend that she’d seen me go by “wearing something that looked like a giant towel?” YES! I am a hoopy frood who knows where her towel is AND WEARS IT!)
My Costume History, Day 157: 70s Supergirl, made f My Costume History, Day 157: 70s Supergirl, made for Dragoncon 2013 I had wanted to do this 70s style Supergirl for a while, and had it on my short list as a possibility for Dragoncon that year - but wasn’t sure it would fit in my budget. I was at my grandma’s for a weekend that summer, and she said “Wanna go to the fabric store?” And I was like uh is that even a question LOL. She bought me the spandex I needed to make this. Yay! The top is a full leotard - I used a KwikSew pattern to make it, though I initially cut the V-shape neckline WAAAY too low and had to sew it back up a bit! Lesson learned, ever since then I ALWAYS start too high and work my way down LOL I also got so excited I was going to get to make this and I was going to knock it out really fast, that I just completely blanked on the sleeves and made the ones straight off the leotard pattern, instead of the gathered puffy sleeves it’s supposed to have. Oops. By the time I realized I didn’t have enough fabric to recut, so I just left it. The shorts I made using a swimsuit pattern, and the cape is just a square of red spandex gathered down to fit at the neck, and sewed to a strap that fits over my head. The belt is actually my original Batgirl belt - if you saw that post, I had started out with one belt, then replaced it with a leather one. The old one was still hanging around and I realized it would work great for this! I made some belt buckles out of plastic panels covered in the leftover spandex. Bought the patch for the leotard and used my Scarlet Witch boots. This was really fun to wear at Dragoncon - I wore it for a long time that weekend, got a lot of pics, and it was comfy (there’s also a lot of pics of me out there with the wig up in a hair clip because it was late at night, I was hot and maybe a little drunk with my light up cup I had with me that year LOL) I haven’t worn it again except for the white backdrop shoot not long after. This was kinda the tailend of comic book costume phase, and costumes I make at the end of a phase always suffer because I don’t rewear them as much as I should. But I still have it, so who knows, maybe I’ll drag it out again one day.
My Costume History, Day 156: Fionna from Adventure My Costume History, Day 156: Fionna from Adventure Time, made for C2E2 2013 For my only trip to C2E2, I had to fly with my costumes, for the first time in like a decade. I decided I only wanted to take things I could fit in my carry-on, so I packed easy things like Ms Marvel. But I did still want something new, and I eventually landed on a Fionna costume! I loved Adventure Time and this would be easy to put together and pack. I made the top out of a blue knit, using a shirt I had as a pattern. Made the skirt out of a darker blue stretch knit - it’s 2 layers, but the top edge I just sewed together and left the edge raw. I didn’t want a lumpy (LOL) waistband or hem under there, so since I knew this wasn’t going to unravel, I just left it so it would be smooth! I had a Finn hat already, so I used that as a guide to make my Fionna hat. Used a matte white stretch knit, and it velcros at the chin. The ears are stuffed with batting to keep them up. The backpack I made out of entirely leftover materials. The green spandex was leftover from Enchantress and the green knit was leftover from the Powerpuff Girls from a decade before LOL. I made the basic backpack and then reinforced it with some foam shaping on the inside. Added a zipper to the top to make sure it was actually functional for me - so nice to have a place to put my phone and camera and stuff! I stuffed the straps with batting as well to make them look a little more puffy. Bought the socks and shoes and the wig was my Supergirl wig. I debuted it at C2E2 and it was so fun to wear! AND comfy! The best! I decided I needed a sword for the next time I wore it though, so for Dcon that year, I took a toy sword I had and upgraded it. Chase made the bow base out of plastic for me, I covered it in fabric and added the “jewels”, and and made the streamers out of blue ribbon. When we moved in 2019, one of the movers spotted it, brought it inside and said “Where do you want your Adventure Time sword?” We hired the right guys for our moving job LOL I actually had it out to possibly wear to a con earlier this year, but it didn’t make the cut. I’m sure I’ll find an excuse to wear it again one of these days.
My Costume History, Day 155: Dr Forrester from MST My Costume History, Day 155: Dr Forrester from MST3K, made for Halloween 2012 At work that year, we decided our Halloween theme would be Mad Scientists. My whole team came dressed as Mad Scientists or their assistants - but of course I had to be my fav mad scientist, Dr Forrester. Headed to Hancock and got some green cotton, and made a quick lab jacket using a houserobe pattern. I heat-transferred the Deep 13 logo on, wore it with a black turtleneck and some glasses I had. It was fine for a fun day at work. But then for my birthday in 2013, my husband & parents together gifted me my own Tom Servo! I wanted to take Tom to GMX with me that year, but wanted something to wear with it, so I decided to spruce up the Dr Forrester jacket. I took the jacket up to be more fitted, and added a hook and eye closure at the waist. I opened up the side seams on the bottom and added in some pleated godets to give the jacket a little more flare. I also added a facing to the front panel just to clean up the construction a little bit. (The cotton I used for the godets and facing didn’t quite match my fabric from the year before, but I kinda like how they look slightly different). I wore it over a black 50s-ish dress I already had, black boots, and bought some better glasses. I did indeed wear this to GMX that year, carrying around my Tom Servo. Kevin and I went to get a table at the hotel restaurant for breakfast while I was wearing this - Chase was going to meet us a few minutes later. I walked up to the hostess and asked for a table for 3. She seated us and I put Tom in one of the chairs... and then thought, “did that hostess think I was including my robot puppet as one of my 3 for this table? Lord I hope she sees Chase come in and sit in a few minutes and doesn’t think I’m crazy” LOL I also took this to Dragoncon a few times to collect a few MST3K autographs on Tom - I still have a few more to go! Here’s hoping they come back to dragoncon one of these days.
My Costume History, Day 154: Belle from Beauty and My Costume History, Day 154: Belle from Beauty and the Beast, made for Dragoncon 2012 I still loved my Belle ballgown from 2005, but after a few years, I was seeing some wear and tear. I also just thought it would be fun to make a new one with a different look, so I decided Dcon 2012 would be the time and place. Well I left this a little late. I had a very busy summer, making 4 Time Lord robes, 3 witches, Wasp, and everything else you’ve seen the past few posts... and I didn’t start on this til the end of July that year. Which is like, completely crazy to me now LOL I used a warm yellow gold taffeta for the majority of this. For the bodice, I used the same pattern I’d used for the 05 version (cuz I really liked that shape), with some boning and a lace-up back. I layered a couple of different embroidered organza over the taffeta and I loved the effect, plus added some beading and gold trim. For the shoulder drape, I pleated my taffeta down to fit, and added some beading there as well. I felt like it needed something a little more, so I also made some little gathered ruffles and attached them to the bottom edge at the arms. The skirt was several squares of the taffeta pleated down to a waistband - once I had the basic shape done, I started playing around with my leftover fabrics. I didn’t really have a solid idea of what I wanted to do, so I just experimented. I ended up doing tiers of pleated taffeta, separated with swags of the embroidered organza from the bodice. I finished it off with more of the gathered ruffles, and some beading on the tiers. Used some gold appliques and yellow roses at each gather. Bought the shoes, dyed them and added trim to them, and also decided I needed a new wig, bought it, added the widows peak and styled it. I wasn’t thrilled with the end result at Dcon 2012. So I brought it home and started messing with it. Decided I liked it better on my panniers than my round hoopskirt, added more beading and trim and restyled the wig. Brought it back for Dcon 2013 much happier with it! Worn it several times since - but I’ve wanted to make a new one for at least a decade. We’ll talk about that one in a few months though :)
My Costume History, Day 153: Time Lords from Docto My Costume History, Day 153: Time Lords from Doctor Who, made for Dragoncon 2012 @lindenash and I had talked about doing this for a while, and then we roped @chasingphotography and @deweese into it as well! We didn’t stick to one Time Lord reference - I picked elements I liked from various sources to make our own thing. For the robes, I wanted to use something we could all easily get and use coupons for, so we used this red stretch velvet from Joann. The tiered sleeves were the most work intensive part, because I had to interface and back layer to keep them from stretching - glad to have had Ash’s assistance on that! The rest of the robe was a basic shape, but I did make them all longer to flare out on the floor. My original plan was to put hooping in the hem, but I scrapped that towards the end after testing it. It would’ve been fine for standing still for photos - but we were planning to wear these in the Dcon parade! The under-robe is an embroidered taffeta from Joann - they are sleeveless and the back panel is cotton, in an attempt to TRY to keep these costumes breathable. I made the upper collar of the robe and the belts out of a cotton velvet, and they close at the neck, and the robe hooks onto the belt with a hook and bar to keep them in place. The big gold collars Chase & Derek made of fiberglass. They made a base to build them all off of, then fit them to each of us. We couldn’t find enough of one gold trim to glue on the edges of all 4, so we each picked our own. They cast the Seal of Rassilon, and since we ended up with extra, we also added one to the back of the fabric collar piece that hangs down below the gold collar. We did indeed wear them in the Dcon parade, which was a choice. We were SO hot and all melted out of them afterwards while waiting on the Doctor Who photoshoot. But it was still fun - we haven’t worn them together again, but I’ve worn mine on its own several times over the years, including sticking Kevin in Chase’s costume a couple of times. I still have mine, but the rest have been retired. Glad we got to do it anyway!
My Costume History, Day 152: Sarah Sanderson from My Costume History, Day 152: Sarah Sanderson from Hocus Pocus, made for Dragoncon 2012 My friends and I had been talking about doing a Hocus Pocus group for years at that point. Finally decided Dcon 2012 was gonna be the year. For Sarah, I started with the Simplicity Tudor stays pattern and edited it a bit. It’s a canvas and cotton interior with boning and laces up the back - the outer fashion layer is some silk I dyed and embroidered. Did all the embroidery on a road trip that summer! Could not find mesh or netting I liked for the sleeves, but found some in yellow I liked. It would not take to dye, so I used fabric paint, which did stiffen them up more than I would’ve liked! I tore them up and weathered them a bit. The skirt is an underskirt of red fabric I had leftover from something else, then an outerskirt of 3 parts - the back part you don’t see green faux suede leftover from Chase’s Green Arrow tunic. The front panels is a red eyelet cotton I cut apart and reassembled to give it a different look, then added red embroidery floss along the bottom for the tassels. The draped section at the hips and sides is a silk chiffon I dyed. It’s a lot - but it’s so fun to swish around in. I reused my Black Canary wig and my Jane boots. I also made Winnie and Mary - I’ll just do a quick recap of construction here because I don’t have room to dig into all 3! Winnie was a cotton velvet I dyed, made using a modified Simplicity 9891, it’s all one piece except for a purple elastic waisted underskirt. Painted on the details and used some strung gold beads for the trim. The wig was my old Black Widow wig. Mary’s vest was some burlap I dyed and backed in cotton, and the blouse was based on a peasant blouse pattern using some cotton I dyed. The skirt was layers of a plaid flannel with an elastic waist, and some of the scrap fabric added to the front. Ash & I did her wig together. We had so much fun in these at Dragoncon that year! We’ve only worn them together one other time - for a photoshoot with @chasingphotography for Halloween 2013, and I’m still obsessed with those photos. I’ve worn Sarah on her own a few times - mostly for Halloween events. So glad we got to do this!
My Costume History, Day 151: Batgirl, made for Dra My Costume History, Day 151: Batgirl, made for Dragoncon 2012 I had several Batgirl looks saved as inspiration for a few years by this point. I went ahead and bought a cowl from ReevzFX before I even knew which one I was going to commit to. When the new52 look came out, I decided, that’s the one! I had a blue bodysuit from a project that didn’t pan out - I put it on a mannequin and drew out all of my seaming on that, then cut it apart to turn it into a pattern for my Batgirl suit. I alternated between the shiny & matte side of the spandex to give it a different look in some areas, and I used a stretch knit to create the ribbed sections on the legs and arms. I used a gold wet-look spandex for the other parts. I’d originally planned to do the boots a different way, but the boots I bought didn’t work out, so I decided to just do the boot covers as part of the suit - that way I could just wear some heels I already had. Wasn’t exactly the look I wanted, but it worked in a pinch. I used my Ms Marvel boot covers as a pattern, & then sewed them to the bottom of the black suit. I hate making gloves, but they needed to match, so I forced myself to make them LOL. Chase cut the bat symbol for me and I sewed it onto the suit, & I made the cape out of some leftover fabric from Huntress - it snaps onto the suit at the shoulders. Chase made my gauntlets, as well as a little insert that fits into a window on the other side of my gloves. My (first) belt was a piece of vinyl covered in the same gold spandex with some stitching details. I debuted it at Dcon 2012 and I wasn’t totally happy with it. Brought it home to rework some parts - I moved the bat symbol up a little higher, took up the neck strap of the cowl, Chase fixed up the gauntlets and we made a new leather belt with the details carved in. These little tweaks helped a LOT - I brought it back to Dragoncon 2013 and was MUCH happier with it! I’ve worn it a few times since, to some local cons and events. I’ve had plans for a few years now to 3d print some new gauntlets, because my original ones are pretty fragile and have cracked in places. Next time I decide I want to wear it, I’ll finally look into that.
