Rogue – X-Men ’97 Black Outfit

Outfit:
The pants are just a pair of black jeans I already had. I did think about getting a pair of leather pants – I have some from Ruby Heart somewhere still, and thought about trying to dig them out of storage, but I doubt pants from 2003 will still fit me so I didn’t attempt it LOL. The jeans were comfortable and worked fine.
The top is one I bought from amazon. It fit ok except the arm holes were HUGE and ended like halfway down my ribcage, so I took the shirt up at the shoulder seams to make them fit better.
I found the X symbol online, sized it and cut it out of gold HTV on my silhouette. Ironed it onto the front of the shirt.
I bought the belt and belt buckle online. When the belt came in, I unpicked the end of the belt to remove the buckle it came with and replace it with the X-Men one, hand-sewing the end of the belt closed using the existing holes already punched in it.
The gloves were just my Black Canary gloves – they aren’t accurate since the yellow isn’t an X – but they were so close I went ahead with them. I guess since I liked this costume so much I need to upgrade them before I wear this again.
I wore 2 different pairs of boots with this at Dragon Con – a knee high pair of heeled boots the first night, and then after that I stuck to my stacked combat boot style shoes. They were more comfortable.
Wig:
The wig is where I did most of the work here. I’ve wanted to do the yellow/green cartoon Rogue costume for ages, with the big curly 80s hair, but just never have. I saw an ad for a wig site that had one and thought, ok, if I commit and invest in this wig for this quick easy costume for Dragon Con, maybe that’ll be a kick in the pants to finally do the yellow/green costume. Well, the wig I saw wouldn’t come in in time for Dcon, so I decided I’d just do it myself.
Bought 2 wigs on amazon – an auburn curly wig and a short white wavy wig. Thankfully they had a very similar crown, so I cut out the same shape on both. I was left with a red mullet wig and a white topper from the white wig.
I straightened the red wig before starting – I had hoped its curls would work for what I wanted but they were too tight. Once I had the red wig straightened, I sewed the red mullet wig and white topper together to make one wig.
Then time to get curling. I loaded the whole thing up with my pink foam curlers, steamed it and let is sit overnight. Took the curlers out, and then started teasing it like crazy. Once it was BIG, I started going in and smoothing and reconstructing the curls, trimming some of them to be shorter.
Overall I was really happy with how it came out. My one beef is that the white wig had this one weird weft right in the front that was really visible. I tried to direct the curls over it and I think it’s fairly well hidden, but it still bugs me.
History:
I ended up loving this costume at Dragon Con! It was probably the easiest, comfiest costume I brought with me, it was quick to get into, it had pockets, comfy shoes (with the combat boots anyway) and people seemed to really like it. Does this mean I’ll do the yellow/green? Maybe maybe. It’s definitely higher on the 2027 list now that I have the wig…
