Leia progress!

I felt kinda off-and-on weird all weekend, I’m chalking it up to upping my dose of one of my medications. One second I’d be freezing cold and then suddenly burning up and drenched in sweat. One second ready to go out and ride my bike for an hour and the next my head pounded/can’t keep my eyes open. Ugh! Very frustrating.

But I did finally make some headway on the new Leia dress.

First of all, who at Joann Fabrics cut out a swatch of fabric in the center fold??

I’m going to guess/hope it was just some random customer who snuck their own swatch. I would have had a full bolt if not for that. (I was aware of it when I bought it! But seeing it again just makes me facepalm.)

Hardest part was getting all this fabric laid out totally flat. Normally with fabric folded length-wise, I can cut it out in our bedroom right outside my sewing room. But since this had to be folded width-wise, I had to move furniture in the living room and crawl around on the hard wood floor. I almost called my mom to come help me get it laid out flat LOL

Then I laid out my original dress on top of it to use as a pattern – which just made it get all wrinkled up again.

Layer 1 cut out! I cut it a tad longer than the original. No reason. Probably shouldn’t have.

Then I got the rest of the fabric laid out again and used Layer 1 as a pattern piece to cut Layer 2.

Both layers on.

I sewed up the side seams… and I came up and in a little further on the sleeve curve. I pinned this it out on my original dress to see how far I wanted to go — I’ve always been aware my 2006 Leia dress sleeves came down too low, and it was one thing I wanted to fix on this one.

And here’s both layers together last night… I started to pin them together but I stopped because I need to get the side slits measured out a little better and probably trim an inch or two off the bottom hem.

I probably won’t have another chance to work on it again until next Sunday. But I have a solid plan of attack and if everything goes well I should have it done then. Then on Thanksgiving weekend I’m planning on going by Tandy and picking up new belt leather.

Anyway.
I discovered superzoom on instagram stories and probably annoyed a lot of people with it over the weekend.

And Saturday we got the other backdrop for the play painted:

Weekend before last, when we painted the manger backdrop, it took forever. I said what if instead of painting ths entire piece of fabric grey, I dyed it? So I did and it made life much easier, all we had to do was paint on the “grout” lines and the window. Although my fingernails are still grey around the edges.

Speaking of the play, it’s this weekend, so we have practice every night this week (hence, why I won’t be able to work on Leia again until Sunday). Tonight is full costume/prop run through.

baby Jesus is watching you!
