    when harry potter looked french

    March 30, 2004 /

That reminds me… something I’ve been meaning to mention. My all time favourite “critique” has to be the one from some guy on elfwood. (it was really more of a “strange comment” than a “critique”, but still) It was my Harry in the Rain piece: Person commented: “Good pic. But…. y does he look french?” That just cracks me up.…

    when i got irritated

    March 30, 2004 /

Sometimes I get sick of being nice, and someone will say something to me online that will just irritate me to no end, when it really shouldn’t. ie, person commenting on my Leia sketch in my devart account, telling me I “could have cleaned up the stray marks” It just irritated me to no end. Yeah I could have but…

My Costume History, Day 114: Huntress from Birds o My Costume History, Day 114: Huntress from Birds of Prey, for Superman Celebration 2009

There was a big lull in costumes for me - finished Sally in Feb, & then didn’t do another costume til June. This is pretty normal for me NOW, but back then, it was because I had a medical thing come up & I was wiped. No energy for ANYTHING for a while.

Finally got myself together & decided I wanted to make a Huntress costume for Superman Celebration that summer. In particular I wanted to base it on some Bruce Timm art I had saved. I bought this purple knit fabric online, intending to dye it darker when it came in - but I actually loved the vibrant tone of it once I saw it in person, so I left it as is!

I made the basic suit by copying a leotard I had, & made the cape by just draping it on my dressform. Made all of the white trim out of some white stretch knit & got it all attached. The cape velcros to the suit in the front to keep it in place. Made the upper part of the gloves out of the same fabric, & covered a pair of boots I bought online in it as well. I did NOT want to make the actual gloves, so I bought some purple ones online. They don’t match exactly, but whatever, just glad to not make gloves LOL

The belt is painted leather with a belt buckle and boxes Chase made for me. The little things at the top of my boots and gloves Chase made for me out of some star wars greeblies he had sitting around.

I reused that Zatanna wig for this - even with the wonky extensions, but I liked the shape of it for this! The mask we made by vac-forming plastic over a cast of my head - something we’d use a few times over the next few years. Its nice and lightweight and fits my face exactly! I glued some ribbon onto the sides that tie under my wig to keep it on.

Debuted at Superman Celebration which was really fun. Also took it to Dcon and GMX later that year. Chase had a white backdrop set up at GMX for anyone to use, so we did my white backdrop shoot of this there. It wasn’t exactly like all of my others though, so I’ve always wanted to reshoot this... but just never have. One of these days I’ll get it out, clean it up and get that reshoot done.
My Costume History, Day 113: Sally Jupiter/Silk Sp My Costume History, Day 113: Sally Jupiter/Silk Spectre I from Watchmen, for Megacon 2009

LOVED this costume as soon as promo images came out and got to work. I bought the undersuit online, and when it came in I cut the straps off and replaced them with clear ones. I made the little yellow dress out of 2 layers of chiffon - it is all gathered and attached to the black satin collar at the top, with a faux lace-up detail in the front. (It velcros closed in the back). It’s tricky to put on because I have to get it all tucked into the corset jussst right.

Made the little corset out of black satin, interfacing and spiral steeling boning. The lace up detail in the front is just for show, it actually laces up for real in the back. Bought all of the other accessories, and added buttons to a glove I already had. Bought the wig online and styled it.

Debuted it at Megacon in 09, and loved it! Although we had been at Disney the day before, me in flip-flops, and the top of my feet had gotten sunburnt. So wearing those stupidly tall heeled boots all day was a torture session LOL

After Megacon, I touched up the wig and fixed a few things I didn’t like, and brought it back out for Dragoncon later that year. Got some really great photos there. Also took it to MidSouthcon in 2010.

This was the very first costume we ever shot on the white backdrop, and it’s the reason we started doing them in the first place! I wanted to recreate the pin-up art of her, so Chase bought a big white fabric backdrop and we shot it. And not to put all that new backdrop stuff to waste, I shot a bunch of other costumes on it too... and never stopped LOL We’ve changed the backdrop setup several times since and I think we really have it dialed in now!

And because of that, I wanted to reshoot her, so last year I got the costume out and cleaned up and we did a brand new shoot! I substituted the original leotard with a new vintage longline bra I use for my Star Trek uniform. Love the new photos - but still have a soft spot for the originals too. I think my original “pinup” shot from the first shoot was better than the second! But I’m glad to have both to choose from.
My Costume History, Day 112: Ahsoka from Star Wars My Costume History, Day 112: Ahsoka from Star Wars/Clone Wars, for a 2008 event

We had a big event coming up with a sports team, and I decided I wanted to do something new for it - I really wanted to make an Ahsoka costume! Didn’t have a lot of time, so Chase and I got to work.

I made the top and skirt out of a burgundy faux suede from Hancock. The top had boning and a hidden lace-up panel, hidden by another panel and some velcro. Bought the leggings and added some speckled paint splatter to them. Bought the boots and Chase made the upper part and gauntlets out of foam and leather, with some cast “buckles” on the side. Bought the belt, Chase made the accessories and carved and painted the leather tabard piece.

The headpiece has a wireform base, covered in model magic and coated with caulk. I painted it and added the beaded parts. For the makeup I used a mix of Ben Nye colors and a white eyeliner pencil, along with a bald cap to hide my hair.

Debuted it at that event - it was quite an adventure to get into in our hotel room. I was completely exhausted by the end of the night, and freezing (it was november!) and on the march back to our car, wrapped in my dad’s jedi robe, I lost some of the buckles on my boots :(

Since it was so much work to get into, I didn’t wear it again anytime soon. In 2012 I decided I really need to wear this thing again, so I got it out and wore it to MidSouthCon that year, and then went back home and immediately did the white backdrop shoot then and there, because I knew I wasn’t going to get into it again LOL

I never felt like I suited this younger Ahsoka look. So once we had it shot on the backdrop, I sold it to a new home. That being said I’ve thought about doing an older Ahsoka look several times in the years since - I think they’d work better for me, and I think we could make the whole thing better this time around, especially if I don’t have to work under such a short time crunch like the first time!
My Costume History, Day 111: Princess Aurora from My Costume History, Day 111: Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, for Halloween 2008

I wanted to do a Sleeping Beauty costume - it’s always been one of my fav Disney movies. And I wanted to do it in blue! Headed off to Hancock to see what I could find - they didn’t really have what I wanted, but I did get a blue satin for the basic dress, and I got some blue chiffon for the skirt so I could use that to cut some of the satin shine. They didn’t have a dark blue I really liked for the over-bodice (I wanted velvet!), so I ended up with a dark blue satin. I did love the brocade I found for the shoulder piece tho!

Came home and got to work - my dress is 2 pieces - a full basic dress out of the lighter blue satin, and a separate bodice worn on top that is the darker blue with the shoulder section and hip panels. The base dress is modified Simplicity 2573, and I also used the same dress pieces to make the bodice. The bodice is boned & laces up the back. The shoulder section closes with a hook and eye over the top of that. Added some silver trim to the hip panels. Made a second overskirt of the chiffon & added some sequins to it for sparkle.

Bought the wig and styled it & Chase made my tiara and necklace. Debuted it at Halloween that year - it was fun to wear & the skirt was so huge it was fun to spin in. Also took it to Dragoncon in 09.

Restyled the wig several times over the years & eventually replaced it fully in 2010 when I made Briar Rose. Did the white backdrop shoot with the new wig not long after.

But after that I wasn’t able to fit in it anymore - the base dress had a zipper back & it was too small. So it sat in my closet for a decade, until 2020 when I needed something to do! I got a blue satin close to the original color & made an extension in the back so I could fit in it again! I also figured now is the time to remake the bodice the way I originally wanted - remade it in a dark blue velvet and made new hip panels out of some velour I had on hand too. Kept the original shoulder panel and trim.

This costume got a reshoot on the backdrop with all of the upgrades - love the reworked version! Now that I can wear it again, I just need a better wig! LOL
My Costume History, Day 110: Ame-Comi Wonder Woman My Costume History, Day 110: Ame-Comi Wonder Woman from DC Comics, for Dragoncon 2008

I really loved the Ame-Comi line of statues! They were so fun and I fell in love with the Wonder Woman version, so of course I wanted to make it.

Bought a red leather online and made the bodice - built it around a bra at the top, boning for the bottom portion and changed the back to have some lace-up panels. Made the skirt out of a silk lining fabric, it velcros closed at the side, and added the iron-on white stars. Did the gold detailing there from leftover gold leather from Kingdom Come WW.

Chase made the tiara, shoulder armor, shield, and shin guards for me. They are plastic with apoxie sculpt detail and I love them. The sword is foam with details he sculpted and cast. The wig is two wigs - the main one I built up the shape with foam, and the second is the ponytail. Bought the shoes and painted them and added the wings made of foam.

Chase was working with a prop maker on another project and they agreed to trade work for each other - this guy was supposed to make my chestpiece, belt and the little side panels. He kept saying they were almost done and he’d be sending them soon. The weekend before Dcon he said they weren’t going to be done in time... so it was brainstorming time, because everything else was done and I was GOING to wear this costume. (and guess what, 18 years later, still haven’t heard anything more about those pieces. I’m still have trust issues over that.)

We decided the quickest way to do them with what we had was wetformed leather. We cut out the panels, Chase carved the detail into them and we wet and weighted them over my dressform for shape. Chase glued them to my bodice and we were set.

I didn’t LOVE how they turned out but I am proud we got it done and I was able to wear it. I did love the costume - felt so badass! I wore it at Dcon that year, and again in 2009, and for a photoshoot in Nashville at the Parthenon that was super cool. Did the white backdrop in 2016ish I think? Long overdue. Still have it - not sure it fits anymore, but I still have the shield on display in my costume closet to this day!
My Costume History, Day 109: Zatanna from DC Comic My Costume History, Day 109: Zatanna from DC Comics, for Dragoncon 2008

I was already doing Black Canary for Dcon that year, so I was like... might as well double up on the fishnets and do Zatanna too LOL. I thought it would be fairly easy to put together, so I got started.

The vest & shirt were from my own closet. I bought a pair of black swimsuit bottoms and sewed the white shirt to them, essentially turning it into a leotard. I did this because I hate having a gap between things at my waist! Sensory thing. I took the vest in to fit better and added some boning to the inside to give it a little structure.

For the jacket, I found a boy’s tuxedo jacket on ebay - it was a wedding rental company selling off stock. Perfect! It came in and fit great, I just had to take up the sides a little.

I bought the wig and hat on ebay - the wig came in and was 100% NOT the wig pictured in the listing, it was barely brushing the top of my shoulders and the pic in the listing was about 5-6 inches longer! The seller insisted it was right and would not take it back/refund. I didn’t have it in my budget to buy another wig, so I took some black wefts I had leftover from another project and sewed them into the wig towards the bottom, just to make it longer. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked in a pinch and gave the wig the shape I wanted.

The hat came in and was... tiny LOL And I have a small head! It looked ridiculous. And again I didn’t have budget to buy something else, so for Dragoncon that year, I just rented a nice one from our local costume shop. The shoes I got at Hot Topic and they are INCREDIBLY uncomfortable but for some reason I keep using them beyond this costume!

Debuted it at Dragoncon and it was fun to wear, except the shoes. After Dcon, Chase got me my own really nice top hat for Christmas, so I took her to Megacon 09 and Superman Celebration 09 too with my new hat. Did the white backdrop shoot not long after, and in 2012-ish I decided I wasn’t going to wear it again, so I sold the jacket to a new home. I kept the shirt - it became my Trillian shirt in 2012! And I still have my lovely hat - one of these days I need to do a new costume to go with the hat. Ideas?
My Costume History, Day 108: Starfire from Teen Ti My Costume History, Day 108: Starfire from Teen Titans, for Dragoncon 2008

After doing the cartoon Starfire in 05, I wanted to do a comic look of hers too. Since her comics look changes so much, I just picked elements I liked to make my own.

I also decided I did not want to do full bodypaint, nor did I want to tape myself into that very low-cut outfit like I had done with Urd. So I bought a chestpiece and painted it to match my orange makeup, and I bought a white bodysuit, and dyed it to match also. Chase did some airbrushing on it to give it more depth.

I made the leotard out of purple metallic spandex, and I sewed it onto the dyed bodysuit. It does have to be taped onto the chestpiece, but I’d rather do that than have it taped to me!

Bought the boots & covered them in my spandex, and sewed them onto the suit also so they wouldn’t droop. Chase made my gauntlets and collar.

My fav part was the wig, it’s two wigs plus extensions I chopped up, sewed back together, cut and curled. I LOVED how it turned out!

Debuted this at Dcon 08, wore it in the parade, where I nearly passed out! But it was fun, I was really happy with how the costume turned out, & the photos we took of it that weekend.

I planned to take it to Megacon 09, but when I pulled out the chestpiece, it had discolored. Just put it back in storage until Dcon 2010 where I got to be Starfire for a big Teen Titans group... now I had to figure it out. I decided I’d forego the chestpiece and sew bra cups into the suit and use a clear bra strap to hold it closed. I engineered all that into the suit... then decided I hated the clear strap and sewed it closed in the front at the last minute in the hotel room. I didn’t like how the suit looked like that. The wig had also kinda flattened out over the years which made me sad.

In 2022 I decided to try to resurrect it to do a long overdue white backdrop shoot. I washed and restyled the wig, though it still wasn’t quite up to the 2008 look. I took the bra cups out of the suit and repainted the chestpiece. Finally got to shoot the “original” look and its ok. It still didn’t quite live up to the 2008 look, but I’m glad to finally have it shot and catalogued.
My Costume History, Day 107: Black Canary from DC My Costume History, Day 107: Black Canary from DC Comics, for Dragoncon 2008

There’s not a lot to this one - but it was one of my fav, go-to costumes for about 3 years.

Chase wanted to do a Green Arrow costume, and I’d been wanting to do a Black Canary costume, so I picked this more modern leotard look to throw together to match his costume. I bought the black wetlook spandex leotard from River’s Edge dancewear, and added the yellow ring zipper pull. I bought the gloves and boots, and added the yellow straps made of painted leather. And that’s all I got for construction on this one LOL

Super simple costume but I ended up wearing it a lot at Dragoncon that year, because it was by far the most comfortable thing I brought with me. Only thing I wasn’t happy with was the wig - so after Dragoncon I bought a new one, which then became my absolute 100% favourite blonde wig I have ever owned, and you will see it pop up several more times throughout this series.

I wore Black Canary lots more times over the next couple of years, to Dragoncon a few more times and Superman Celebration in 2009. It was comfy and didn’t take up a lot of room to pack. Also took it out and did a photoshoot in downtown Nashville later in 2008. I didn’t want to walk around downtown Nashville in a leotard and fishnets though, so I wore jeans and a hoodie over it until it was time to shoot. The funniest part of that was when we were shooting around the Nashville symphony building which had a security guard walking around the perimeter. We’d just hang out on the benches until she was out of sight, I’d quickly take my hoodie and jeans off, we’d shoot a few photos, then I’d jump back in my jeans to be ready to look like we were just hanging out again when she came back around LOL But I do love how all of those shots turned out.

Haven’t worn it since Dcon 2011, I think was the last? I’d love to get it back out and redo the white backdrop shoot, I was never happy with those photos...
