Leia’s Medal Ceremony Gown

I’ve only drawn this costume a handful of times and I always find it tricky to get right – but I was mostly happy with the result on this attempt. I think I could tweak some of the linework to make it a little better, so I may do that in the future.

My Costume History, Day 149: Emma Frost/White Quee My Costume History, Day 149: Emma Frost/White Queen from X-Men, made for Dragoncon 2012 So remember how just a few days ago I posted about my 2011 Emma Frost costume and said I didn’t want to do the Hellfire Club corset look, so I made a dress version instead? Yeah a year later I changed my mind and decided I was feeling the corset version LOL So there’s not a lot to this - I really could have just included this with my first Emma post but it’s my countdown and I’m going to consider them separate costumes LOL The corset is the one I had bought for my Beastly Belle costume back in 2008 and covered in yellow fabric. I unpicked the yellow cover and was left with a nice corset for this! I bought the swimsuit bottoms but I hated how I had a gap between the corset and bottoms, so when I brought the costume back to Dragoncon in 2013, I made an extension for it out some scrap white spandex to make it taller. The biggest issue with this version was figuring out how to wear the cape now. The cape on the original version connected to the dress with some hooks and bars. Didn’t have that here, so I rigged up some ribbon tabs sewn to the inside of the corset, and some adjoining ones on the underside of the fur collar of the cape. It wasn’t perfect but it worked ok. All of the other accessories were from the 2011 version - boots, gloves, collar, wig, etc. I wore this at both Dragoncon 2012 and 2013 - it was fun to wear! I still haven’t shot this particular variation on the white backdrop - it’s on the short list to do eventually.
My Costume History, Day 148: Fluttershy from My Li My Costume History, Day 148: Fluttershy from My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, made for Dragoncon 2012 My friends were doing pony costumes, and I, as an OG MLP lover who still has my entire collection somewhere in my parents’ attic, wanted to join in. I thought I’d put together a simple little Fluttershy outfit. I made the skirt using a basic Simplicity skirt pattern, with yellow cotton and pink ribbons trimming the pockets and as a waistband/bow. Bought the cutie mark patch on etsy and sewed it on. The blouse I had. Bought the shoes and wig online. @thesenator made the ears and @lindenash made the wings. I added my leftover pink ribbon from the skirt to them to tie them on like a backpack. So yeah not a lot of work to this, it turned out cute and was a nice fun late night costume to wear with my friends. After we did the white backdrop shoot with it not long after, I sold it to a new home. I do still love this particular pic of me with Indy though - her sticking her tongue out! 😝 LOL
My Costume History, Day 147: Donna Noble from Doct My Costume History, Day 147: Donna Noble from Doctor Who, made for Timegate 2012 After doing my Journey’s End Donna costume the year before, I thought it’d be fun to do more Donna costumes. I came across someone selling this shrug that would work for her Silence in the Library outfit on the Doctor Who costuming livejournal, so I bought and set about putting the rest together. For the shirt, I decided to make it. I got this really lovely thin grey stretch knit online, it’s so soft! I found a shirt pattern that was pretty close, I just added the larger center waistband section and the gathers on the shoulder straps. Also made the necklace and some of the bracelets - Bought the beads and put them all together on a black cord. I’d made a couple of the purple bracelets before stumbling across some similar purple bracelets out in the wild while shopping - they basically looked exactly like what I was already making, so I bought them! Wore them with the ones I made and was glad I didn’t have to make more LOL Bought the tanktop, had the jeans and boots. I didn’t get the mention the jewelry in my previous Donna post (not enough room) so I will here - the hoops are just some cheap clip-ons I bought online. I don’t have pierced ears so you usually don’t see me do earrings for characters unless I HAVE to - I find clip-ons uncomfortable! But I don’t feel like Donna until I have those earrings on. Debuted this at Timegate 2012 and also wore it to Dragoncon and GMX later that year. I brought it to a few more cons over the next few years also, it was something that was easy to throw in my bag and have a simple comfy costume that was close to “real clothes.” (In fact one of my complaints about Donna costumes is they are TOO “real clothes” and sometimes even standing in the middle of a Doctor Who convention event people don’t clock it as a costume. That’s why you don’t see me do them much anymore unless I have a reason!) Anyway, still have this one, still pull it out for videos occasionally, but dunno that it’ll ever make a con appearance again - Pompeii took over as my go-to comfy Donna con outfit when I made it in 2014 LOL
My Costume History, Day 146: Belle’s village dress My Costume History, Day 146: Belle’s village dress from Beauty and the Beast, made spring 2012 This costume had a very interrupted construction period. Most of this costume was made in 2009! I was making a Belle dress for a stage production at the time and I liked the fabric I got for it so much that I went back and got some for myself. I’d never been happy with the stiff cotton I’d used for my 2nd version in 2007, and this fabric had a much nicer drape and I loved the color. I also decided to make as two pieces instead of one dress like my 2007 version - it’s a separate bodice and skirt. The bodice has some light boning, cotton lining and a lace-up back. The skirt is just a big rectangle pleated to a waistband. They also had the same fabric in white, so I got that for the blouse. I’m pretty sure I used a peasant blouse pattern for this, but can’t remember what. I wish I’d made the sleeves a little bigger/wider, but ah well. So spring of 2009, I had the shirt and bodice both like 75%-90% done, the skirt was done I think, just needed a closure in the back. But I had some medical stuff happen and I was exhausted. I put it all to the side to finish later, because by the time I was feeling better I had to jump into Dragoncon costumes for the year. (And because of that - I really don’t remember a lot about the original construction of this. I didn’t write down notes or blog about it, so I’m guessing at a lot of this!) And I didn’t touch it again until 2012. I was bored that spring and wanted something to work on, so I got this out. I could not find any of my originals leftover fabric, so I had to make do with the costume pieces as they were. I wasn’t totally happy with the bodice or the blouse - but I’d worked myself into a corner with both of them and had to just live with what was there. I finished everything as best I could. Used my version 2 apron and shoes. Even though I wasn’t thrilled with the construction I WAS way happier with this version that version 2 - I wore it for Halloween that year, and for some more Halloween events since, plus videos and of course the white backdrop shoot. I think about remaking it again occasionally. Maybe one day.
My Costume History, Day 145: Romana II from Doctor My Costume History, Day 145: Romana II from Doctor Who, for Timegate 2012 @chasingphotography had made a remote control K-9 in 2011, which you saw previously in my Marie Antoinette TARDIS post - and while I enjoyed wearing my TARDIS dress with K-9 in his matching jacket, I wanted to do a costume that went “better” with K-9, so I decided to put together a Romana II costume. I settled on this one from City of Death because it seemed easy enough, PLUS — I had enough black fabric leftover from Lady Blackhawk that I could make the basic dress without buying anything! I mocked up the top part of the dress in some scrap fabric and used that for a pattern to cut out my black fabric (and used the mock-up to line the upper section). Pleated the skirt section onto it and hemmed it - pretty easy! Everything else I bought. Bought the shoes, which were slightly too small so they really hurt everytime I wore this LOL. Bought the button up shirt, the tie, and the hat. I glued some ribbons onto the hat for the hatband. Also bought my sonic screwdriver on the RPF. I bought the wig on ebay - and this was my very first lace-front wig. When I first started cosplaying, I NEVER thought I’d be able to afford a lace-front wig! But they became more affordable over time, and I was so excited to finally have one LOL. I REALLY liked this wig and it worked great with some of my other costumes, and I’m kinda sad I sold it, but oh well. I debuted this at Timegate that year, wearing it around with Chase’s K-9. It was fun and comfy - except those shoes - so I took it to Dragoncon as well, where I got to take pics with a whole pack of K-9s and a bunch of Daleks too. That was fun! I had planned to make (or buy and alter) the blazer that also goes with this but I never got around to it. After we did the white backdrop shoot a few months later, I decided I probably wasn’t going to wear this again, and sold it to a new home.
My Costume History, Day 144: Wonder Woman from DC My Costume History, Day 144: Wonder Woman from DC Comics, for Halloween 2011 I loved Wonder Woman’s new52 look, & I had tried to see if I could squeeze it into my Dcon 2011 plans. There was no way LOL So I aimed for GMX instead. I started out by making the bodice out of red cotton, canvas & the fashion fabric layer - it’s boned, has built in bra cups & laces up the back. For the outer fashion fabric layer, I drew stitch guides on the wrong side, then sewed over them with my machine with a darker red thread to create the lines on it. The stars I ended up going over again with some red embroidery floss to help them stand out better - and I wish I’d done that with all of the stitch lines because they don’t show up as well as I would like. I made the briefs using a swimsuit pattern and navy blue spandex. For the stars, I carefully cut out stars from the fabric I used for my classic Wonder Woman briefs, and sewed them onto this pair. The boots I bought online and covered in my navy blue spandex, and added the white stripe made of white knit fabric. Unfortunately the boots were slouchy, which wasn’t the best option for covering in another fabric, so they didn’t turn out exactly the way I wanted, but they’re fine. The armor pieces Chase made, they are layers of plastic covered in a silver film. The belt is permanently glued onto the bodice, the chestpiece snaps on, & the armband and neckband velcro. the tiara ties on under my wig. I did also buy a pair of navy blue spandex leggings so I could also do the pants look - but I only wore it that way once! (And forgot to put my gauntlets on for half the photos...) I had planned to debut this at GMX, but the pieces weren’t done in time. So instead I wore it for Halloween that year, and did the white backdrop shoot the next year. And I never wore it again :( I would’ve taken it to Dragoncon the next year, but this was kind of the tail end of my comic costume era and my brain had moved on to other things. I did get it out in 2017 to wear for Halloween again, but the bodice snaps for the chestpiece broke as I was getting into it, so I didn’t wear it. It’s still here, maybe it’ll make a surprise appearance again one day.
My Costume History, Day 143: Rose Tyler from Docto My Costume History, Day 143: Rose Tyler from Doctor Who, for GMX 2011 As I mentioned in my last post, I was a brand new Doctor Who fan in 2011, and I’d already done Donna and my TARDIS dress for Dragoncon but I wanted (Kylo Ren voice) MORE! On the Doctor Who costuming livejournal one day, I came across someone giving away some costume pieces - including a recreation of Rose’s Satan Pit jacket. I sent the seller some goodies from Universal Studios and I got a jacket for a new costume. Sweet! I decided to throw together the rest of it to wear to GMX that October. The undershirt is just from Target, the jeans and boots are from my Donna costume, the belt I had. Literally the only thing I did for this costume was the wig - I bought the blonde wig online, darkened the roots with markers, and teased it. Wore it to GMX and it was fun - had Kevin dressed up in his Doctor Who costume so it was a good time. Threw it on for some photos at Halloween because I didn’t take any at GMX. And I never wore it again for years. It just wasn’t a serious costume for me — I didn’t make any of it, I wasn’t aiming for accuracy, it was all just for fun, and I had other Doctor Who costumes I enjoyed wearing more. I’m glad I got to do this costume, but it just wasn’t something I was going to keep revisiting like Donna. After years of only having 2 photos of this costume, I finally got it out in 2021 and took new photos of it on the white backdrop. I don’t plan to wear this again - I’ve got the jacket, undershirt and wig all bundled together in a bag to eventually divest. One of these days I’ll get my act together and get some stuff listed because I desperately need to do a closet clean out.
My Costume History, Day 143: Donna Noble from Doct My Costume History, Day 143: Donna Noble from Doctor Who, for Dragoncon 2011 After Dcon 2010, I made a resolution that for next year’s con, I’d be a Doctor Who fan. I binged a bunch, and achieved my goal LOL Of course I wanted to do a costume and I decided that Donna would suit me best & her Journey’s End costume would be the most recognizable. Initially, I wanted to make the leather jacket from scratch. I had a whole game plan for it laid out in my head... & then I priced leather and said ope, not doing that! So I got on ebay and started looking for leather jackets I could modify. I found this vintage jacket and got it for around $50 I think? It arrived and set about modifying it - I opened up the hems at the front edge, & removed & reshaped the collar & front. I also took it in at the sides, removed the belt loops, & added the buttons. I found buttons the size and shape I wanted and painted them to match the jacket. I did make the top. It’s made out of 2 different ribbed stretch knit fabric. I felt like looking at the references that the ribbed pattern on the upper section (above the bustline seam) was different than the bottom, so I found two that were slightly different, and I dyed one to match the other. I put it together without a pattern, and it turned out all right. 15 years later I now don’t think the patterns were different and that was a lot of extra work for no reason LOL (I also did not put sleeves on this in an attempt to make it less hot to wear.) I bought the tank top and dyed it, bought the jeans and the boots. Chase helped me make my belt - I bought a piece of wide tan elastic online, and we cut and dyed the leather panels, and he installed the buckle kit for me. Had a great time wearing this at Dragoncon that year - it was comfy and so fun to do all the Doctor Who stuff at the con for the first time. I wore it a LOT over the next decade - it became my go-to comfy costume. In 2013 I added a wig so I wouldn’t have to try to achieve Catherine Tate’s incredible volume anymore LOL. I still have it of course - it still pops up here and there especially on tiktok where I’ve made a lot of Donna content the past 6 years.
