wake me up

Ok so Disney is over and normally my brain would automatically switch into dragoncon mode but this year, it’s not. 2020 totally effed up my natural brain rhythms.

I am trying to get myself back into a pre-dragoncon mindset, but neither my body nor my brain is ready for it. I’m still physically tired from disney. I’m finally over my heat rash and my face seems to be slowly clearing up (by friday the day we came home, my face felt like sandpaper and then I broke out) thanks to moisturizing like crazy. I haven’t had the energy to do anything. And I don’t want to do anything. I keep thinking, I need to go do this or that in my sewing room and it’s like pulling teeth. I just… don’t feel like it yet.

And I know dragoncon is still a big question mark. But I decided a few weeks ago to function as if it’s happening. For the past couple of my months my mental health has been so much better with having my disney projects and the disney trip to focus on. So I decided I’d do the same for this summer. Jump into dragoncon projects like it’s happening, keep my brain busy.

And I have managed to do a bit of costume stuff the last week. But before I get into that, let’s do talk dragoncon a bit.

First, we bought our passes for this year last week. It’s earlier than we usually buy (we usually wait til Chase’s summer bonus – we didn’t have 2020 tickets because they canceled before his bonus hit, so nothing to roll over to this year), but we figured if it happens, they’ll cap attendance and we need to make sure our badges are already in the system. So that’s done.

Second, I had to think about what costumes I’m taking. This is normally something I would have figured out months ago but I just realised on saturday – I haven’t thought of it at all.

So, here are the things I’ve made since last Dragoncon that I’d like to take, plus new projects I’m planning:

1. Poe Dameron/Blue Glitter Leia – this is 100% done and ready to go.

2. Padme nightgown? – I wasn’t considering taking this one because it’s pretty rough after being “saved” but after having it on for a dressing video saturday, I might.

3. Ceremonial Leia – I need to get new shoes. I’m not wearing those death traps from 2007. And I need to make a bracelet. Otherwise ready to go.

4. Sailor Jupiter? – Dunno that i want to take this but it’s a possibility.

5. Arwen Hope – need to fix my necklace, otherwise ready to go.

5. Eliza – need shoes and wig. More on that later.

6. Raddus Bridge Leia – was originally meant for dragoncon 2020 so of course I’ll bring it for 2021.

7. Historical Belle Library thing? – this was also originally in the plans for 2020, but I did get to wear it to MCFC before everything closed… so I dunno if I’ll take it to dcon or not.

8. Mothman? – my bday costume from 2019. Was planning on bringing it in 2020 as a silly late night costume. Still a possibility

9. New stuff – Padme “Liberty Dies” and Bail Organa – meant for 2020 of course, more on this in a minute.

10. New stuff – Scarlet Witch – more on this in a minute.

11. New stuff – a silly little mash up I wanted to do last year. Dunno that I’ll get to it.

______________________________________________

I had other new stuff on my 2020 list but I don’t know that they’ll carry over. So now let’s talk about what I am working on.

ROTJ Uniform/Endor Leia:

Yeah I know this isn’t on the list above. But I started getting fabric for it last year and picked up some more fabric in atlanta. I started kinda working on it this weekend – looking at my patterns mostly – but I decided it wasn’t really something I wanted to wear at dragoncon, so I put it all away, it’s something I’ll focus on after dcon.

Eliza:

Went to goodwill yesterday on a hunt for shoes to mod for Eliza and came home with these. Heels are a little tall and straight but otherwise I like them. I also went to Michael’s and got some paint for them. Hoping to paint them this afternoon after work if the weather is ok.

I also still need to get a wig. I had something picked out back in december but I’ve long since lost that.

Padme/Bail:

It doesn’t look like much but I did FINALLY make myself do something on Padme after months of trying. Like literally I’ve had “make hoopskirt/test fabric knife on the silhouette” on my to-do list white board since last fall.

I got out the leftover cotton panels from the curtains I used for Eliza and got the hoopskirt started. It’s all put together except the hooping channels and the hooping (obviously). I ordered twill tape the other day for the channels, supposed to arrive wednesday.

The reason i’ve put off the hoopskirt for so long is that the hooping was so dang expensive. I’ve decided I’m going to use the hooping out of the cheap amazon hoop I got last year as a start and go from there. That hoopskirt didn’t work for any of my existing costumes.

And last night we got Chase’s Bail armor pieces out and figured out where each piece went and labeled them. i also figured out what pattern I need for the suit, and have plans to get his velvet dyed this weekend.

I also need to test that fabric knife. I bought a fabric knife cutter for the silhouette last year and wanted to see how it worked on this velvet for the floral pieces on the skirt. I’ve been putting it off, need to do it.

Scarlet Witch:
I have literally nothing to show for this because I have not had the mental energy to even start researching it. I reallllly want to do it… but my brain has not caught up to my heart just yet LOL.
I guess I need to start with patterning… and fabric source ughing that’s been my biggest block with getting started on this.

So that’s really all I’m going to focus on this summer. Scarlet Witch and Padme for me – Bail for Chase – I think that’s plenty considering the amount of costumes I made last year that did not get to go to dragoncon. Basically with having no 2020 con I had the longest leadtime on dragoncon costumes ever. Need to look at it that way.

And now onto everything else from the last week…

Last Saturday we celebrated dad’s birthday!

And then of course this weekend we did Mother’s Day for one side on saturday and Mother’s Day for the other side on Sunday.

Saturday night I got into costume and recorded some dressing videos for tiktok for the first time in a while. I’m posting all star wars stuff this month so I did 3 star wars costumes – ceremonial Leia, padme nightgown and jedi leia. Haven’t posted the last 2 yet.

Remember how earlier this year I made that little half-bodice to use as strapless bra for Dale? And then decided I didn’t want to wear something that tight and annoying in the parks? Well guess what it worked GREAT for ceremonial Leia and nightgown Padme! Yay!

When I got those shoes above for Eliza, I also got these. No reason, they were just cute and felt like they might come in handy for vintage looks or costumes in the future.

Goodwill also had a 3rd pair that was a good shape but I couldn’t bring myself to buy 3 pairs with no plans for 2 of them.

Currently agonizing over opening some of my carded Padme figures. I asked IG what they would do. It was about 60% open and 40% don’t open. So I think I’ve decided to open one – the senate address, because it’s only selling for $1 on ebay carded.

Also here’s that Padme headpiece from Galaxy’s Edge. Fits me nicely! I have no plans to do this costume but… maybe one day?

Lastly here’s Luna bregrudgingly wishing me a happy (cat) mother’s day.

So goals this week:
1. Get twill tape channels sewn into hoopskirt once twill tape arrives
2. Dye Chase’s bail velvet
3. Get pattern for Chase’s Bail suit, start mock-up
4. test silhouette fabric knife
5. finish eliza shoes
6. start patterning wanda

that’d be a good start I think
