Anime Blues Con Post – Part 1

HI! I have a lot to post today. It was a long weekend!

And it all started Thursday night, Ash and I had tickets to go see Trixie Mattel! We went and had dinner first and then headed over; we had pretty darn good seats (like 7th row center I think?). It was miserably hot in the venue, the chairs were super uncomfortable…… but it was SO GOOD. Absolutely hilarious, great music, great costumes. 10/10 would recommend.
I’m not going to post a ton of pics but here’s a few…

I got a set of Trixie pins and a makeup bag! (I had just thought a couple of days before that I needed a new one. So good timing.)

It was a late night for me and thankfully I had Friday off because it was time for Anime Blues Con!
Tried to sleep in a bit but I woke up with a migraine (AGAIN OMG). So I got on up, took some medicine, ate breakfast and watched the RPDR finale. Then slowly started getting myself and Kevin ready for the day.

Kevin wore Link on Friday and I wore TFA Leia, with my new underdress and ring!
I also had bought new earrings…. but they were too big for my ear and we didn’t have time to finish getting them sized down (half of our tools are packed up, so stuff like that takes longer than normal these days…). So I’ll finish sizing them down for Dragon Con.

Nana and Kristie picked me and Kev up and drove us down to the convention center… Chase took a half day of work and was meeting us down there a little later.
Got there, got our badges, and got shown to my table… I wasn’t expecting a full dealer’s room table, I thought I’d be tucked back in a hallway somewhere LOL!

Thankfully Chase wasn’t too far behind us with my prints and stuff, so we didn’t sit at an empty table for too long. Saturday I made sure to bring some fabric to drape over it so it looked a bit nicer.

Once Chase was there, we went and had lunch in the Maid Cafe – I thought that was something Kevin would enjoy. Turns out we all enjoyed it, it was a lot of fun and the food was good!

Then we set up my table and I hung out there for a bit before heading off for my first round of prejudging for the costume contest. Once that was done, went back to my table for a bit more, then the dealer’s room was closing up, so we packed everything up and headed home to change – grabbed a quick dinner on the way. Then we spent a few hours with friends playing 5 minute Dungeon which was so much fun!

New Leia underdress a VAST improvement over the first one.

Saturday we had to get ourselves up at 6am (no migraine that day yay)… Kevin got into Peter Pan and I got into Tink for the day. Tink (sans wings) is comfortable enough to wear for long hours while still being cute so it was a nice choice for judging all day… though I wore a sweater over it because it got a little chilly in our room! We judged from 9 til 3 and then pow-wowed to go over everything until about 4. We had a half hour break for lunch mid-day – I was hoping we could get into our hotel room but when I ran over to my table to ask Chase – he said he’d already tried and the hotel was going to text him when the room was ready (we’d ask for 10am check-in which I know was a pipe dream…). So I ended up just hanging at the table for a half hour, and I got to wear my newly repaired wings for a bit.

When we got done judging I texted Chase – check-in in general was supposed to be at 3 and he still hadn’t gotten a text the room was ready by 3:30. So he went on over and they let him check-in. So weird. So by the time I got over there, they were unloading the car so I was able to help with that. The hotel was dog friendly which was a lot of fun, we saw so many cute dogs!

I quickly got out of Tink and into Bespin Leia while Chase got Kevin changed out of Peter Pan and into Luke.

So Tuesday last week I decided to get Kevin a new Link wig that could also be used for Luke…. because his current wig is somewhere and storage. I didn’t think to keep it out. And I think he’s getting to where he needs a wig for Luke. So I found a $12 wig on amazon and it came thursday. I had to snip so many places in the wig cap to make it fit his head LMAO. It worked fine for Link. But for Luke….

Ummmm no. LMAO. But he had atrocious wig-hair from wearing Peter Pan’s wig all day, so we went with it. Going to find him a nicer, more natural looking one in the future.

We made it back over to the con center by 5 and got to swing by the Star Wars meet-up!

I tried to look as cool as this awesome Amidala and failed, LOL.

Holdo!!

My bro!

Then we grabbed some popcorn and lemonade and went on into the contest set-up.

I love this snapchat filter.

I took live photos of the contestants while they were onstage! I don’t have the video versions uploaded yet…. (my dumb phone + windows 10 won’t show me everything saved on my phone when I plug it in…), but I do have all of the regular photos uploaded into my gallery here. They’re not great – just older iphone photos — but they did come in handy when going back over the judging stuff during intermission.
(And I did miss taking pics of one exhibition entry and I apologize to that person!)

After awards were handed out, we headed back to the hotel to change and eat dinner.

We had wanted to go eat somewhere fun downtown… but we were so tired and hungry we just ate at the restaurant in the hotel. It… wasn’t great, especially for how expensive it was. I wish we’d just sucked it up and gone somewhere.

Sunday morning I woke up with a migraine (AGaIN WTF) but after taking some stuff felt a tiny bit better and got into my pink Belle costume.

I CAN CLOSE IT ALL BY MYSELF

I’m pretty darn happy with it by now. I need to go out and do a fun photoshoot with it one day…. once the weather gets a bit cooler.

We checked out and got the car loaded and moved, then headed over to set up the table for the last few hours. Let Kevin go hang out in the game room for a while, since he hadn’t gotten to do that yet.

After a bit we realized we needed to get on home and get some house stuff done, so we packed up and headed out! Overall my table sold a decent bit over the weekend, so I was happy.

We took Kevin home, ran to Lowe’s to pick up some stuff, and spent the rest of the day getting the house ready for the appraiser to come this week. We had a few repairs and touch-ups to do. Chase was working right up til bedtime trying to get the list done, so it was a lot and it was a busy day… but the great thing about having to clean up and get the house ready is that ALL OF MY COSTUMES FROM THIS WEEKEND HAVE ALREADY BEEN TAKEN OUT OF THE BIN AND PROPERLY PUT AWAY ON THE DAY I GOT HOME FROM THE CON.

That has literally never happened in 20 years of doing this stuff.

So it was a fun weekend. I’m glad to have a day off in the middle of this week to unwind a bit. I’m probably not going to do a ton of sewing this week — I do have some basic things I can start looking at on Amidala but I need to get some lining material first, and a Joann’s run is on the to-do list for this weekend. Then I can dive in.

Oh and I did think up another costume to make for Dragon Con over the weekend. So, just because it doesn’t need a post of its own, are my Dcon plans for this year:

1. Crait Leia (sewing done, still needs wig, one of the rings figured out)
2. Amidala (I have my main fabric, that’s about it)
3. A goofy duo with Ash that requires no sewing, just some light wig work. For fun late night costumes.
4. Another lazy costume that is more prop-based than sewing — I’m buying all the clothing components but I do have a large prop I need to get started on very soon. Maybe I’ll do that this week until I can get to the fabric store for Amidala lining.
5. Another fun costume but this one I am making from scratch — a top and some shorts, plus styling a wig (though I may get Frankie to do the wig for me…)
6. Tinkerbell — should be ready to go and won’t need updates.
7. Marvel Girl with a new wig!
8. Bespin Leia maybe

I thought about bringing pink Belle back now that it’s wearable but it was so freaking hot to wear at ABC I dunno. If nothing else comes up I may bring her. I’m trying to keep it under 10 this year, and I want to keep a slot open in case there are any fun guest announcements that might mean I need to take a specific costume. *cough*CatherineTateDavidTennant*cough*

Anyway, tomorrow I should have Chase’s photos from the “real” camera uploaded so I’ll do a second post covering all that!
