Ren Faire, boredom, and packing

I’ve never had free time in August. It’s so weird. I was actually bored this weekend because I had no costumes to work on.

And we had time to go to the Ren Faire Saturday! Unfortunately we totally picked the wrong day today. We were torn between Sat and Sun based on the weather, but Sat ended up working better for us so we just grabbed umbrellas and went.

I curled my hair Friday night, slept in the curlers overnight and Saturday morning after a little work I had the most perfect Merida curls I’d ever done. I was really proud of them!

Sadly that’s pretty much the only picture I got of them. We walked the main length of the faire, about 10 minutes or so, I looked down and….

From Merida to Drowned Rat!

It was horribly muggy out with the humidity, it was still drizzly off and on and together it totally killed my curls. 10 minutes after that:

“Why did I even bother?”

I was soooo excited about going and wearing Merida – like I’ve been excited about this since I made the costume last November – so between my hair deflating, having to keep the skirts tucked up in my belt (because of the mud), AND losing a piece of my costume (my gold medallion on my belt melted off the pin back, I don’t know where I lost it *cry*) It was overall disappointing. None of that is on the Ren Faire though – I really enjoyed the Ren Faire itself and wish we could’ve stayed longer, and then Sunday ended up being not near as muggy and it was sunny out and that’s when we should have gone. Next year I guess we’ll try to plan better.

Some more pics…
These guys were so funny!

Kevin IS Catherine Howard in the Six Wives of Henry VIII

I told Kevin to sit on the throne and pose like a king, I guess an umbrella is as good as a scepter

Combat

On our way out. I think I need a belt loop or snap to keep my belt in place.

Aaaand this is what my hair looked like by like 4 that afternoon. The curls were completely gone. Usually when I sleep in curlers my hair stays pretty curly for a good three days! Stupid weather!

Kevin and I, so pretty

Last week I had an idea for a shirt I wanted to make. I had this white, light-weight knit backless tank from Target… I’d bought it as a backup for my Leia Disneybound shirt back in May and ended up not needing it, so it’s just been hanging in my sewing room since. There’s this shirt on welovefine that I love and I’ve wanted for ages (a Star Wars version of the Beatles’ Revolver cover) but it’s just on a regular tshirt which I wasn’t crazy for. I couldn’t find an artist name to see if maybe they had the design somewhere else with no luck. So I was a little naughty… I copied it onto that white Target shirt using a fabric pen.

I blew the image up to scale and stretched the shirt out over a piece of cardboard. I was hoping to trace most of it but it wasn’t easy enough to see, so I got the basic shape down and then freehanded it. The large faces and hair were the easiest parts. The black-and-white photos were not suited to a fabric marker and knit and weren’t so easy, but they pass the 10 ft test. Especially when it’s worn and not stretched out.

The only sad thing is, I expected this to take a lot longer and keep me busy until our vacation… well it didn’t, I finished it yesterday afternoon and found myself with nothing to do after that. So I packed for Dcon.

Everything fits in one bin except my umbrella, and the things I’m carrying in a garment bag of course. Even my makeup bag fits in there. And my small repair kit. Wow!

And here’s a random pic of our Magic Band vase. Kevin finally got his AP magic band so I had to add it to the top. I’ve got to pick him out a cool one on the next trip so he has it for Oct.
