blargh.

I don’t really want to go into details, but this past week has been rough.
So I dove into sewing!! I kinda put Romana to the side for a bit, since I was tired of breathing in feathers and fur (I bought a mask to wear, so I can finish it up without hacking out feathers!) and started on one of my other Dragoncon projects.

This one was supposed to be a secret; and it still kinda is – I’m only posting pics and talking about it here on my blog until the con, out of respect for the rest of my group.

It’s Trillian from Hitchhiker’s Guide! I’ve had this floating around my “want” list for ages, and I’m really excited how easily it came together. I’d forecast 3-4 weeks of work (between other projects) to finish it, and I basically finished it in a week. So that’s really exciting to be so far ahead!

I started out by having to do something I didn’t want to do; I’ve had pattern pieces for my Team Zissou costume pinned to a few yards of blue cotton since 2005. That’s right, I had pattern pieces pinned to fabric longer than some people have been cosplaying. I always wanted to finish it so I just left it along, until I realised I could use that cotton as my mock-up/lining without having to spend any money.

So I sadly took it apart. C’est la vie.

Anyway, I used a modified “animal” costume pattern. I got the pieces cut out and got the fit close to how I wanted, drew on my seam lines, and cut the mock-up apart to use as pattern pieces. My outside fabric was blue terrycloth, which every review I’ve read says ravels and comes apart like crazy, so I used every tip I could find on keeping it together. I lined all the pieces with my cotton mock-up, obviously, and also used a tight zig-zag as I saw suggested on a forum.

So here’s the first front side coming together:

So I started taking pictures rather late in this process.I started out by making a jumpsuit out of some blue cotton I had on hand. I got that fitted right, and got my seams in place, and used it as a pattern (and then lining) for cutting my blue terry cloth.Kelldar.com | My Facebook Page | Tumblr | Instagram

And now both front sides done:

Here are my pattern pieces coming together on the terry cloth version. These are the two front panels of the jumpsuit.Kelldar.com | My Facebook Page | Tumblr | Instagram

Got the back attached and trying everything on for sizing. Please ignore my laundry.

Test fit for Trillian! I have the basic suit together. No zipper or sleeves yet.Kelldar.com | My Facebook Page | Tumblr | Instagram

And, mostly done — after this pic I did a little more work on the fit through the waist and chest, but that was about it:

Trillian is pretty much done!I didn't take a lot of pictures of this process. I made this pretty quickly, it came together in about a week or so. I just need to make my patch for my sleeve and get it attached at this point.Kelldar.com | My Facebook Page | Tumblr | Instagram

I may attach the shirt permanently into the suit before Dragoncon, right now it’s a separate piece. I didn’t make it, it was a dress shirt I already had, I just modified it a bit.

I still have the patch to make, but I’m saving that for working on while I’m at my grandmother’s with no internet this weekend 🙂
