Friday, I did indeed wear Arwen, and got a few new pics. I went without the wig most of the time, only put it on for the pictures.
I wore Susan first thing Saturday morning – it was quite interesting having to drive the 45 minutes to the con hotel while wearing this (I didn’t wear the wig while I was driving, though, LOL)
Friday I discovered that Death of Rats had fallen apart in a few places – part of his bone tail had fallen off, one hand was gone, and his scythe was broken. I had to make a new scythe for him last minute. The skirt for Susan had frayed pretty badly, since when I first got it and cut it up in 2002, I didn’t hem it. It held up fine for when I wore it back then, but years later after living in a box for so long, it had started to fray. I snipped those and fixed it up a little.
The wig was still in great shape, surprisingly. I’ve kept it pinned to the costume closet wall all along, so it hadn’t gotten crushed or anything.
My own scythe was broken. When packing up our stuff at Dcon 2003, I couldn’t fit it back in the box – I’d already taped up my “tall box” and didn’t want to untape it to put the scythe in there. So I crushed down into a little box, bending it in the middle. Then, later on, I let my dog play with it. LOL. I taped the bent part (which is thiiiiiis close to breaking) – it didn’t help much, I still had a bendy scythe, but it was better than before. Fixed the chipped paint and added some silver spray paint to it.
My bodice was also busted and had to use something else last minute.
My cape was also long gone, so I used Chase’s Vader cape. I also used my boots I bought for my Halloween costume two years ago (the one I never finished) instead of the Morrigan boots.
I did get Terry Pratchett’s autograph while wearing it, he was very kind and signed my book I’d brought with me 🙂
I was somewhat happy with Leia. Not completely. First off:
These are the most ungodly shoes on the face of the planet. They were sent to torture me. They draw me in by being the perfect shoes for my Ceremonial Leia costume, and only $5 at that! And then they do terrible, terrible things to my feet. After about 10 minutes in them I had to take them off and walk around barefoot, and I only put them on for pictures. They rubbed a really bad place on one of my toes 🙁 I don’t know what I’ll do about it in the future, I may try to find something else to wear.
I was really happy with my necklace! Chase wants to polish it before I wear it again, but I really liked it just like it was. The hairpiece also turned out pretty good, I need to put it higher on my head next time around.
The things I didn’t like were the neckline of the dress and the sleeves.
I’m going to take the dress apart and sew the lining in correctly, so the neckline lays flat without the facing and edges of the sleeves wanting to pop up. I should have done that in first place, but I didn’t think of it until it was too late to re-do it for the con. I hope the fabric will hold up to being taken apart – I would really hate to have to buy something else to make the dress out of, because I love this fabric.
I also ended up using the chiffon for the sleeves. I would love to find something more like what I used for the outer layer of my lake dress… I also didn’t like their shape, and when I hemmed the chiffon it curled. Ick. Oh well, it looked pretty for the con, I can fix it for v.3.0.
We then went to the room to watch the game, and everybody came in during the second half and surprised Chase with a birthday cake! Check it out:
LMAO! I love that they were so sweet to get the cake for him and surprise him… he really loved it.
We hung around in the room until around 8 or so, then I got up and put on Wonder Woman, and Chase put on his mando. I didn’t do the masquerade – I would have had to be at “practice” at 5, then in the greenroom who-knows when, then the masq itself didn’t start until 10. I didn’t feel like dealing with all that this year. I had wanted to enter the hall contest in Leia, but I didn’t see any forms on the table. OH well.
Superheroes
I was really pleased with how it came out. I need to get a buffer for the metal for next time – I thought we had one, but friday night I discovered we did NOT have one. LOL.
The metal pieces didn’t bother me one bit. The belt made it a little hard to sit down, but other than that it was ok.
Chase wants to remake the metal pieces, already. I was pleased with them, except the belt – I want him to thin it a bit in the front for next time – I think it’s too “thick” for my frame.
I decided to go get out of that around 11, and I went and put Slave Leia on – very excited to carry my new axe!
We didn’t take the camera downstairs this time, so I just took a few pics in the hallway.
Just a sidenote.
I’ve gotten this question before, and I got it again this weekend… it’s just something that bugs me, I’m sure some of you other costuming girls have gotten something similar before.
“Do you really like Star Wars, or do you just dress up for your boyfriend?”
Um. Yeah. No… at least now I can say, look at my back, check out my tattoo, LOL
Anyway. So yeah, fun weekend. One new costume I’m happy with, one that I’m sort-of happy with that needs some more work 🙂
Next up, this weekend is the movie thing in Mississippi, and then MTAC in three weeks! I’ve got to get cracking on Belle and Utena 🙂
