FAQ Friday: All of my Costumes

Today's question is... Just how many costumes have you done? It's really hard to make a complete list. Everytime I try I end up forgetting something. But I'm going to give it a go. (I'm not counting costumes I made for friends, unless I also wore them at some point.) Last updated: June 2021 1. Star Trek TNG Uniform - my mom made this for me and I wore it at MidSouthCon ...

FAQ Friday: The Worst Costume Advice I Can Think Of

I'm tired of trying to give good advice, so here's the worst costuming advice I can think of. 1. Don't waste time doing research The best costumers just jump right in and make awesome stuff happen, like magic. 2. Don't have a sewing machine and a needle and thread takes too long? Try Elmer's Glue Don't waste time trying to hem or fray-check, either. The fraying edges give it a weathered, realistic ...

FAQ Friday: Things You SHOULD Say to Costumers

Well I made a list last week of things you shouldn't say to costumers... so let's do the flip side this week. 1. "You did a great job on your costume." It's a simple phrase. It's common, too. But it's always nice to hear. Always! You can never go wrong this! 2. "You look fantastic/amazing/wonderful." There's a lot of variations to this. Any pleasant adjective is acceptable. Plus it can ...

Anatomy of a Costume

This started going around facebook yesterday, and I thought it would be fun to make one, too. (And even though isn't really an FAQ Friday, I'm using the FAQ Friday header.) I ended up not uploading it to facebook though - because there were so many thoughts and caveats I had about it that I thought I'd just make it a blog post instead. I had to pick fairly recent ...

FAQ Friday: Things Not to Say to Cosplayers

I know there was a fairly recent blog article similar to this a while back, and I don't mean to step on anyone's toes with it. But after a few weird encounters at a recent convention, I really wanted to throw my two cents into the ring. So, here are some things I've had said to me/said to friends, or seen said to other costumes. Most of these things ...

Cosplay Meme

A cosplay meme I stole because I'm bored. Cosplay Personality Meme! Choose a character from your cosplays that best suits each one… You relate to most: Belle. Ever since I was a little girl and saw the movie in the theater and had that whole, "SHE likes books and I like books too!" moment, preferring to be left alone to read and not wanting to deal with other silly people, ...

wut

I literally.... LITERALLY cannot wrap my brain around how people are so astounded that I take 12 costumes to Dragoncon. Like, I could probably squeeze in 3-4 more without ever feeling crowded. I mean, I can see the other side, I can see how other people only bring 1 costume or no costumes and spend the entire con standing in line for panels and autographs and what have you. That's not my ...

Flickr Thoughts

So, the past couple of months, I've been trying to clean up my flickr account. Retagging, resorting, etc. I've gotten to where I really hate flickr, and I'd totally move to some other site if it didn't mean basically killing most of the photos on my website for several months time. It's not even the annoying yahoo! redesigns I hate, it's the culture. What used to be a nice, supportive ...

Thoughts on a short year

Last year I only made 6 costumes. That's the lowest amount since I started this hobby. Even the year we bought a house and we needed to save money I made more costumes (9). The only years lower are 2000 and 1999 - because I only made 1 each of those years. After realizing this and thinking about it, I realized it's probably due to three things: 1. Disney. I didn't make any costumes earlier in ...

A bunch of questions

1: What was your first cosplay? Depends on how strict you want to get with the definition. I generally point to my Halloween costume of 1998, when I did a closet costume of Britan from my comic, SunDowner. If you say OCs don't count, then my 1999 Halloween costume of Quistis which was my first foray into sewing. Or if just wearing a costume to a convention is what you want to count, ...
