Princess Leia – Star Wars (Doll Poncho)

Made for: MidsouthCon 2006

Background: I came across photos of unproduced outfits meant for the Princess Leia doll from the 70s (as seen here). I loved them – particularly the poncho outfit. I decided to put this together just for fun.

Poncho:

I found this fabric on the sale rack at Hancocks. I made a pattern out of newsprint, then used it to cut the fabric for the actual poncho. I interfaced it with iron on interfacing, since this fabric was pretty thin (though I ran out of interfacing after doing one side, and couldn’t find the same weight to use for the other side… so one side is a tad bit droopier than the other! Oops!) I added the hood, and the trim, and the tassel at the end of the hood. Trim and tassel were both from Hancocks also.

(2025 note: One great regret I have about this costume is that yes, I interfaced this fabric, but I didn’t line the damn thing, so the white iron-on interfacing is visible. Which wouldn’t be a big deal if this was a costume where the interior areas aren’t visible, but they ARE in this costume, you can see the wrong side of the back when looking at it from the front and vice versa. Just things you learn not to do after sewing for 20 years…)

Accessories:

I just wore jeans with it, since the doll has dark blue pants on. And I had the boots, and borrowed the binoculars from my dad.

History:

This was a fun little project. I only ever wore it for MidSouthCon, so one of these days I need to throw it on again.

Update: Well it took me a while – but I finally got it cleaned up and shot on the white backdrop in 2022. Here’s the thing… when I moved out of my parents’ house in 2008, I left this costume at my parents’ house for some reason, still hanging in my old closet. And I never got it back until I cleaned out that closet in like, 2019 I think? So that’s why it took me so long to do something with it again!
