Trillian & Zaphod – Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005 Movie Version)

Made for: Dragoncon 2013

Background: I’d been bugging Chase to do a Zaphod costume since we met, and I finally talked him into it this year. As a result I also put together a Trillian costume, since it had been in my own want list for a good while.

Jumpsuit:
For Trillian, I used a “mascot”/animal costume pattern. I started out by making it out of plain blue cotton, fitting and making seam alterations to that, and then using that as my pattern for cutting out my blue terry cloth for the main part of the costume. I also used the cotton as lining for the suit, hoping that would help slow down the process of the terry cloth unraveling. I used white thread and a very small zig-zag stitch on all of the pieces, again, hoping to keep everything together as long as possible, and also to help the seams stand out a bit more.

Accessories:
I embroidered my Heart of Gold patch & attached it, and just went with my own converse and hair for the costume since it was supposed to be a fun, comfy costume (and it is very comfy, though very warm!). I got a wig (from Arda Wigs) later on for GMX.

Zaphod:
For Chase’s Zaphod costume, I used a “Mad Hatter/Pirate” costume pattern, and I really only altered it to change the collar and add the “cape” piece. The fabric I picked for this attracts every single piece of lint and thread in a 100yd radius, which was awful since I was also working on numerous things I was using white thread for, not to mention the white feathers for Romana! Anyway, we bought a pair of pants online and I altered them. For the gloves, I made a fingerless glove out of nude spandex, and hand-stitched some chains onto them (I did not want to pay for chainmail gloves). We bought the sunglasses and wig online. He made the belt out of leather and cast the belt buckle pieces.

History: Sooo happy to have finally gotten to do these costumes. Glad my husband played along 🙂
