Yeah, go to Jackson, go comb your hair

Spent the weekend in Jackson! Had a great time. Friday night we just picked up dinner and ate at my grandparent’s which worked out great because I was able to watch RuPaul’s Drag Race (I thought I’d have to wait til I got home Sunday). Played some battlefront with Chase, he hated it. But at least he played.

Saturday we had breakfast at Cracker Barrel and then ran to Joann.

This trip was MUCH more successful than last weekend’s. Still no spandex to be seen anywhere. I got on Joann.com and their site says both stores should have plain white spandex? But couldn’t find it at either. Sent in an email asking if they’d stopped carrying it or what was going on. I really don’t want to buy it online.

I also still couldn’t find just plain “bubblegum” pink ANYTHING so I ended up with some pale pink satin I’m going to attempt to dye. Not super happy about that but this is something I wanted to buy in person to test the weight of – I needed a good heavy satin and that’s what this is.
Also got some yardage of an off-white linen I’m going to try to dye blue for TFA Leia. The texture looks good – now to see if it will dye.
And I got 4 yards of a brown linen (the colour is called “potting soil”! LOL) to use for Mon Mothma’s underdress/skirt. More on that later.

Also patterns cuz they were on sale. And I’ve been wanting those 2 Yaya patterns.

A fossil!

I swear this Service Merchandise closed just a few years after my grandparents moved to Jackson – and they moved to Jackson in 1990. I remember going to their Going-Out-of-Business sale with Mema and finding a deadstock ROTJ-era Ewok Village playset and I really wanted to get it but I didn’t even ask for it for some reason. One of my great regrets in life.
So yeah this building has been sitting like that since I guess the mid-to-late 90s. Right around the corner there used to be a Davis-Kidd bookstore, it closed in 2006 and the sign for it is still up, too. What’s the deal Jackson??

After a nap I got up and started getting into Leia for the Jackson Generals game.

New buns worked pretty well!
I think next time, instead of twirling my own hair into the buns, I need to just pin them down flat and do the buns over the top of them. My hair (especially by the bottom) doesn’t quite match so you can see where there are streaks of it mixed in with the ponytails. Plus it’s not as long so I have to deal with pinning down 2 ends instead of one. So yeah – I’ll do mini-buns pinned down flat next time and build the buns off of that. Also, I think I need to do one step at a time on each side – instead of doing one bun totally and then the other one. So that I get them even and can adjust as I go. On Saturday I did the right one first, looked good, and then I did the left one – and it ended up being a little higher and a little bulkier than the first. I had to just kinda shove it and push it down to try to make it match right side. I think if I did them at the same time in steps I wouldn’t have had that problem.

I’ve got 2 things this Saturday so I’ll be able to adjust those things then.

Anyway, more pics…

Another good bun pic

Oh my gosh it was so crowded! I’ve been doing this event since… 2013 I think? And this was the most crowded I’ve seen it. Even after the game started we were still busy taking pictures. We had to head on out though because we promised Mema and Daddy Bob we’d be back to go to dinner with them – we went and had pizza and then Chase and I went to see Wonder Woman.

I LOVED it!!! It was so much fun. I honestly had built up no expectations for it, and really didn’t have any plans to see it right away at first. But then over the last week all my friends on facebook, insta, etc started seeing previews and saying how much they liked it. So I started to get excited, and I wasn’t let down. I want to see it again!

Sunday we had brunch and then came on home, took a nap and then dinner. I wanted to get some sewing done, but alas.

Here’s Mon Mothma as of Friday:

Sleeves are in! I need to trim off the excess from the bottom hem again but I don’t want to do that until I finish the brown skirt.
So yeah I got 4 yds of that brown linen (and omg it is SO HEAVY). I was hoping that would be enough to make a full dress – scoop neck, long sleeve, full skirt. I have a medieval sort-of pattern I wanted to use. But when I got home and looked at the pattern, it’s a 1/4yd short. I could POSSIBLY make it work by taking some of the fullness out of the skirt. Haven’t tried yet. I was hoping to be able to do a full dress so I could use it as a Ren Faire dress later on. Even though I guess a “Potting Soil” brown linen dress isn’t all that attractive but I thought maybe do like a green or blue surcoat over it? I dunno.

Another problem is is that my white top, even after being lined, is still a little see-through, so I’m worried about having a brown top under there. So now I’m thinking maybe do just the brown as a skirt, which I have plenty of fabric for- and then doing a separate white top I wear underneath everything that has the sleeves attached.

I’m going to make a decision tonight once I get everything laid out and see what works.
