Last year my mom got me this really cute comfy black jumpsuit. She told it packs really well and doesn’t wrinkle so I thought, that sounds great for taking to Disney, I should come up with a disneybound outfit for it.
I mulled over a few options of characters who wear black. Darth Vader? Black Widow? Edna Mode? Then just 2 weeks before we left for the trip as I was gathering up my Minnie Ears to take, I saw my Queen Amidala post-senate ears I’d made out of my leftover materials from my 2018 costume. And I was like, I already have the ears, why not just put together a look around this with the jumpsuit?
I knew what I wanted – I wanted a very full cropped jacket to wear with it because I thought that would look cute with the full legs of the jumpsuit. And I decided to make it easy – I just bought a black fuzzy cropped jacket on amazon. It was supposed to arrive about 5 days before we left. Plenty of time.
And again to keep it easy on myself, I decided instead of doing full beaded appliques like the original, I’d instead do like a small brooch based on one of the appliques to wear in the front. Super simple, low effort, but would be fun to wear with my ears.
Well it didn’t take long for me to decide the brooch idea wasn’t going to be enough to sell the idea, so I decided to do one whole beaded applique panel to put on a shoulder, I’d just do it slightly smaller (i printed my guide at like 75% of the original guide from the costume). Then I was like, well just one on one shoulder might look silly, I might as well do 2.
So here I am 6 days before we leave very quickly attempting to do 2 full beaded appliques. Funny how with the actual costume I also gave myself an absurdly short window to make those too, why do I do this to myself?
Meanwhile, as I was working on those, I discovered my jacket was delayed. It was now arriving Wednesday instead of Monday, only 2 days before we left. That would’ve been ok if all looked good, I would still need time to sew the 2 beaded appliques on as well as the gold trim on the edges.
But I just didn’t feel comfortable waiting that late and what if it got delayed again?
So I dug into my stash and found the one piece of the original black fuzzy fabric from my Amidala costume I had left. I laid it out to see how much I had. And thankfully I had JUST used that dolman bomber jacket pattern for Rizzo, I still had it out, so I just used that again – and I had JUST enough fabric to do it.
And it went together SUPER fast, again, probably because I’d just used the pattern for Rizzo and already knew the process and tweaks I’d want to make. Like I had this done in a day – started it Tuesday night, got the outer shell put together and lining assembled. Wednesday afternoon I sewed the lining in. (I lined it with some leftover black taffeta.)
As soon as it was done, I sewed the gold trim around the front edges and hem (I didn’t do it on the neck, for some reason I wasn’t feeling it there). I finished up the appliques friday afternoon, the day before we left, and got them sewn on it and it was done just under the wire. Hence why there are no blog posts about this build – I did it all in the space between blog posts LOL
As for the original jacket? It did show up Wednesday but I didn’t even open it. It’s getting returned. I mean I’d rather have something I made myself in the end anyway, even though I really didn’t need the added stress of making a jacket in 2 days before vacation LOL
Overall I was happy with how it turned out and glad to have a fur jacket lined in something completely unbreathable with how cold it was on our trip LOL. My only beef is that it wants to slip back, so before I wear it again I’m going to put a little closure at the front neck to keep it in place.
I had originally planned to put my own hair in a bun (and let the ears sort-of create that hair shape of the original costume), and I was going to do the Amidala red makeup (not the white face, just the lips and dots). But it was so rainy and cold the day I wore it I skipped out on the makeup because I knew it would just turn into a mess and I wouldn’t be able to fix it on the fly, and I wore my hair down to keep my ears warm.
I did also have to layer under the jumpsuit like crazy; I have a long sleeve black tshirt under it plus 2 pairs of fleece lined leggings. Not ideal especially for visiting the restroom but oh well, I had to do what I had to do to try to keep warm. About halfway through the day I added a disney hat that just also happened to be black and gold and wore my ears on top of that because it was just too cold.
I do hope I get another chance to wear this in the future. Maybe I can sneak it in for a dinner one night on a future trip, when I can get away with wearing pants and a fur jacket without sweating to death LOL.
Please note that none of these costumes are for sale! This is my personal portfolio.
