Padme – Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (Lake Gown – First Version)

Made for: Dragoncon 2002

Background: I absolutely fell in love with the dress the moment I saw it on screen, so it became my main project for Dragoncon 2002.

Journal Entries: Read more at my Padme Lake Dress tag (Includes all versions I’ve made)

Patterns Used: None

Dress: I started out by making a simple sheath halter dress out of yellow cotton. Then, I used a fabric that I loved for the outer dress – I had previously used it for my makeshift Princess Leia earlier that year. It’s a silky-feeling blend that has a slight shimmer to it and takes dye nicely – to this day (2020) I have no idea exactly what that fabric WAS… I used it for a lot of stuff back in the early 2000s and have never found it again. I think it may have been a lingerie-fabric that had a slight stretch to it.

I draped the white fabric around the sheath dress and hand-sewed it into place. Sewed the “sleeves” closed, and once all the fabric was sewn on, I dip-dyed it – very carefully!! I had 3 bins set up with each colour dye and dipped each segment in, with help from my mom to hold up the areas I did NOT want falling into the dye.

Jewelry: The necklace I made of craft foam, thermo-plastic and craft metal – my dad helped cut the craft metal parts. The armbands were brass bangles and thermo-plastic. As of 2020, the silver thermo-plastic sections have shattered.

Accessories: Not knowing what to do about shoes, I wore sandals. I tried to do my hair by using a hairpiece, originally, but gave up after Dragoncon and just wore a ribbon in my hair as the first headband, and wrapped around the rest of my hair, with the length tucked in at the neck..

History: I’ve remade this costume twice in 2006 and once again in 2008; finally, in 2019 I made my final version I am finally happy with.
