Eowyn – Lord of the Rings (Shieldmaiden)

Made for: Tolkien Party 2002

Background: We were invited to attend a Tolkien costume party, and I didn’t want to wear my Arwen chase dress. I had about a week to make something new, so I went with Eowyn’s shieldmaiden dress.

Dress:

I picked a thick satin with a leafy-sort of pattern at Hancock Fabrics, and used the Simplicity LOTR-esque pattern again. The collar ended up being too big and I had to take a weird seam in the front so it would fit right without gaping. Added the little collar section but never really loved how that turned out.

Corset:

I made the corset as a pull-on vest instead something with a closure – I used a brown faux suede and used a shirt pattern (not sure which). The decision to not have a closure was very dumb, this fabric is not stretchy and it’s very difficult to get off and on! The trim I found at the fabric store (and funnily enough, over 10 years later, Hancock still carried this particular trim. I used to point it out everytime I’d go down the ribbon aisle. RIP Hancock Fabrics.)

Accessories:

I bought the cord/rope that tie around the upper arms. The wig and necklace I had.

History:

This is still my favourite Eowyn costume, I still think about remaking it properly, one of these days. I’ve thought about selling this, but when I got it out to do so it just made me feel nostalgic and I put back in my closet LOL.
