Had a really fun day with Dad and @LindenAsh at the Estate sale.
Basically the house was built around the Civil War, and has belonged to the same family up until a month ago when the last family member died.
We got there around 11:30 and the line was stretched back out a ways. They were only letting around 60 people at a time inside, to keep from getting overcrowded. When someone left, they’d let another person in. We stood in line for about an hour, and it ended up being worth it. I’m a little ticked at myself for not taking pics inside, but it was crowded and we were so busy looking it made it hard to have the camera (aka my iphone) out. The house was amazing, it needed some love in some places but you could tell what a grand house it must have been in the past. The architecture and light fixtures were gorgeous. And the house was just chock full of stuff the family had kept and collected for over 100 years!
They had a huge collection of costume jewelry and other little trinkets in the first room, which Ash got a better look at than me. They had tons of old glassware and silverware in the dining room and kitchen, as well as some really old kitchen appliances, a cast iron stove, and presses and things like that. They had a Singer sewing machine from the 1800s, and an old sewing box that had some old notions in it (including some hem tape that looked like it was at least as old as me!) My favourite was a tiny, ornate silver chair – the cushion of the chair was a pin cushion. I wish I’d gotten it! They also had a lot of old sheet music, which dad got a lot of.
Upstairs they had a bedroom full of hats and gloves. I almost bought a hat, it fit nicely but it didn’t look that great on me. Great classic old hats! Most of them $3-$5. Finally we came upon a closet chock full of shoes. A volunteer working at the sale said that the closet had been STUFFED full of shoes. Like, hundreds of shoes. They’d had to throw a lot of them out because they were falling apart, but before we’d gotten there they’d already sold 50 or 60 pairs. I found a pair of cute brown heels, they looked like they’ve never even been worn, still had the original price tag ($4.) So I snagged those, though I guess I overpaid considering the original price tag – $5 🙂
They had a room full of old record albums and old record players, some creepy dolls that Ash got a pic of, and some old military uniforms which were unfortunately moth eaten.
After we finished inside we walked around the side and checked out the Servants/Slaves Quarters (they kept calling it Slaves Quarters, but considering the time I would think it might be more of a Servants Quarters? no clue. Though looks like it’s been inhabited fairly recently!)-
But I came away with the pair of shoes, of course, and a parasol. The parasol is in pretty good condition – not sure how old it is, I’m guessing maybe 60s. It’s for a project later down the road.
