FAQ Friday: Dragoncon Photo Spots

Today's question is... Thanks for your Dragoncon post! Where do you suggest to go to take a photoshoot that isn't too crowded? I talked a little bit about photo spots in my DragonCon post mentioned there a while back, so here's some more thoughts! First, be sure you go check out this amazing compilation of photo locations around the host hotels and Dragoncon area! Now, here's some of my favourite ...

Things I Miss at DragonCon

Piggy-backing on yesterday's post about changes at DragonCon, today I'd like to look back at some DragonCon things that I miss. 1. The Photo Gauntlet Last time I did the masquerade (2006) it was just contestants standing on a stage with photographers taking photos. I'm guessing that's still the way they do it? It's not nearly as exciting and memorable as the old photo gauntlet. I wrote about it here. Man that ...

Dragoncon grumblings

In which am an old woman and want to complain about things. 1. No, I don't like the new logo. It doesn't say Dragoncon to me. The old logo looked like classic fantasy - a homey, nostalgic look that I think suited Dragoncon very well. I will continue to use the old one where I can. 2. I don't like the new parade route. The one from last year - it was ...

Dragoncon Stories: That One Time Ash Punched a Pregnant Lady

I seem to have less stories in later years, because a lot of the later years run together more. I don't know why that is. We're already onto Dragoncon 2006 stories now. This was my first year I wasn't rooming with the girls - I was staying with my BOYFRIEND who I'd met at Dragoncon the year before ;) I didn't include that as a story because I've already told it numerous ...

Dragoncon Stories: That Time David Carradine Fell Through a Wormhole

So, Ash and I did the masquerade again that year, and it was again over at the Congress Center or whatever it was called. So we got dressed, loaded up and went on over. We ended up sitting around in a hall backstage for quite a long time. There we are in the background entertaining ourselves: We got there so early that hardly anyone else was there yet. We were ...

Dragoncon Stories: That Time I Made Poor Shoe Choices

Dragoncon 2004 parade - we decided to walk with the LOTR group! This worked out since I had Arwen I wanted to wear, the mums had their hobbit costumes, and Ash got talked into wearing a cape and accompanying me to handle my train. My Arwen costume was very long and very white, so to keep it from getting destroyed by walking on the pavement, I made a drop skirt out ...

Dragoncon Stories: That Time My Math Teacher was There

OH. MY. GOD. Dragoncon 2003, still. The three of us were trying to figure out WHERE we could get Anne McCaffrey's autograph, since Ash and I wanted it for our moms, who were big fans. We couldn't figure out where or when she was signing, so after a bit of wandering around and digging through the guidebooks, we decided to ask. So, here I am, wearing Ruby Heart. Basically a pirate ...

Dragoncon Stories: That Time I Won

So far all of my Dragoncon 2003 stories sound a whole lot like whining. I promise you that isn't true. All of these stories make me laugh, then and now. But just to balance out some of the whining-type stories, here's a less complain-y one. Dragoncon 2002, Ash and I had missed out on Evening at Bree. We had wanted to go, gone downstairs and stood in line, but after a volunteer ...

Dragoncon Stories: That Time I Was Abandoned

This is one of my all time favourite Dragoncon stories. Dragoncon 2003 was just me, Cath and Ash. We had a hell of a time that year. Monday rolled around, we packed up, had them pick up my costumes to ship them out, and checked out of our room - but, our f light didn't leave for a few more hours, so we checked our baggage and just hung out for ...

Dragoncon Stories: That Time My Wings Messed Stuff Up

I actually talked about this pretty recently in my blog, but here's the whole story in its entirety. So, I'd been wearing Belldandy to every single convention that year, including shipping those wings to Dallas, Anaheim, and now Atlanta. After the Star Wars costume contest that saturday at Dragoncon, I rushed back to our hotel room - mostly to get out of my Padme headdress, as I mentioned last story ...
