Spider-man Swimsuit
Made for SDCC 2005
Other Appearance: N/A

I was so tired of not being able to find cute two piece swimsuits that weren’t a collection of skimpy strings and triangles. I also was irritated at the lack of any kind of fandom representation in swimsuits; superhero looks especially seemed like easy fodder for swimsuit inspirations? (Of course, in 2005 we were just then finally getting fandom t-shirts in womens’ cuts. So I guess I was just too forward thinking with my fandom swimsuit idea LOL — now you can find all kinds of fandom swimsuits thanks to Hot Topic, Her Universe, Box Lunch, etc). So I decided to make my own. I already had a Kwiksew 2 piece swimsuit pattern I was using for Starfire for the same con, so I used it to also make a Spider-man inspired swimsuit I could wear to the pool our first day in San Diego (it was not meant for the con floor! Just theme appropriate for the hotel pool.)

I made the top out of red spandex, and for the “webbing” I painted it on with black puffy paint. Not optimal but there was no spoonflower back then. The bottoms I made out of blue spandex and added a little red spandex “belt” with the same webbing painted on. It turned out really cute and my grandma also got me a Spider-man beach towel to match so I was ready to hit the pool at SDCC that year. I also wore it to go swimming at my aunts’ pool off and on the next couple of years.

20 years later I do still have this, but the elastic in the spandex is breaking down and it’s got that crackly feel when you touch it. Bummer.

More can be seen at the Spider-man swimsuit tag.
