Purple Elvish Cape
December 2004

Mom gave me this purple cotton velvet for Christmas in 2003. I struggled with what to use it for – I thought about doing Arwen’s “Hope” dress with it, but there wasn’t quite enough material. I hung onto it for a full year trying to wait on a costume idea to come up, but nothing specific ever came to mind. So finally I ended up making a new cape – this one has arm holes, which makes it easier to keep on over costumes when it’s cold out. I just used one of my basic cape patterns for it, I did have to play with the shape a little bit to get it to work with the yardage I had. And I left the side seam open for the arm holes and finished the edges there. I also made the hood end pointy instead of rounded, I don’t know why exactly, just thought it looked neat.

I switch back and forth between this cape and the other Elvish Cape for when I have to wear costumes outside during the winter. They’re both pretty cozy.
