Galinda – “Popular”

Galinda’s “Popular” dress from Wicked, made in 2016

Mom was approached to make a “simplified” version of Galinda’s Popular dress for a musical event, so she brought it to me and tag-teamed it like we do with other theatrical costumes we make. My mom handled the skirt – it’s a pink taffeta base with pink organza ruffles edged in ribbon.

I did the bodice – I used my favourite bodice pattern Simplicity 5006 as a starting point. It has a built-in bra and spiral steel boning with a lace-up back. I built the interior first, got it fitted to the actress, and then made a “fashion layer” out of the pink taffeta and then sat and sewed each pink ribbons onto it, before attaching it to the interior. I was really happy with how this turned out and it made me want to make one for myself.
