Dazzler – X-Men
Made in 2004
Other Appearance: N/A
In 2004, I made my Age of Apocalypse Shadowcat for San Diego Comic Con. When I first ordered the bodysuit to use for it, I picked out something that, online, looked like a very dark metallic gunmetal grey. I thought that would look neat for the AoA version of Shadowcat and ordered it. It arrived it and was bright sparkly silver. So I tossed it in a bin and ordered a straight up black suit for Shadowcat instead.
A few months later I pulled out that silver suit and realized I could make a Dazzler costume with it! I made the collar and sewed it onto the neckline. Added a sash made of silver fabric. I made a quick version of her mask out of craft foam and blue fabric – it wasn’t great, but I thought for a con, I’ll paint it on.
I happened to still have my childhood skates in my parents’ garage – and somehow they still fit my feet. (Don’t know how that worked. I got them when I was 8.) I pulled them out and spray-painted them silver. Got it all on to take a few test shots… and quickly realized there was no way I could wear this at a convention with the skates. I would 100% fall and break my neck.
So I never wore it anywhere. Over the years I thought about making the wheels static, or just switching to boots. But nothing ever came of it and all I have to show for it were these test shots.
In 2016 while cleaning out our garage, I discovered the skates had begun to rot and fall apart. I threw them out. Bye Dazzler!
