Princess Leia – Star Wars

Made for: Halloween 2004

Background: After my last minute, thrown-together version for the AOTC midnight show in 2002, it was high time I did a real version of my fav princess.

Patterns Used: Simplicity 4213

Dress: I had a hard time finding a fabric I liked. At first I bought a heavy white material, and started making it using a robe pattern. I got as far as having the main dress done with the sleeves pinned in, when I decided I didn’t like it and started over (that first version of the robe later found new life as Corde’s under-robe). I found a lighter material and used a different pattern (an “Angel” costume pattern), altering it for the addition of the hood, widening the sleeves, and the slits up the side seams. It was lined with white lining material, and also gathered the fabric at the waist, to make it easier to deal with when putting on the belt.

Belt: My belt my dad helped me make – we bought a long piece of leather, cut the shape out, and I dyed it white. My dad cut each of the metal pieces out and attached the silver buttons in the center, and then rivetted each metal piece onto the belt. It buttons up in the back. I love it.

Accessories: The boots I bought on ebay. I had to touch them up when they arrived – they were vintage 80s and had yellowed. My hairpieces are loose wefts I pin around my own hair.

History: I wore this costume a ton before I replaced the dress with a new version in 2006.
