Princess Leia – Comic Outfit
Made for: Dragon Con 2015
Background: It’s been almost 8 years since I made a new Leia costume!! I really liked her look in her recent comic series so I wanted to tackle it.

Patterns Used:
McCall’s 7217, Simplicity 9887
Suit:
I was really excited to try Yaya Han’s bodysuit pattern from McCall’s (above) and I thought this suit would be a great first attempt with it. I was really pleased with how easily the pattern went together, and I only needed minimal tweaks to the fit. I did a second row of stitching around each seam to create a sort-of piped look.
I had picked out a heavy, off-white knit for this project, but even then two layers was slightly see-through, so I had to line it as well. As a result it’s a pretty heavy-duty suit. The quilted sections I made out of the same knit, with some thin batting, and attached to the arms and legs before I sewed them onto the suit.
Cape:
I found a stretch tan material, similar to a twill, to use for the cape and boots. For the cape I used a pattern, and, like the suit, did a second row of stitching along the seams to create a piped look. I had to edit the hood for the pattern a bit to make it larger. I had not planned to make a cowl, but after finishing everything and trying it on, decided I did need the cowl – It was a just a hemmed circle of my leftover fabric that goes on separately.
Boots:
I found the base boots at the goodwill; I wanted something rounded and tough looking but I still wanted a bit of a heel, and I’m pretty pleased with what I found. I made covers for the foot section of the boots, with an appliqued piece on top to imitate the seam lines in the art, and then made the upper boot cover sections out of the brown cape material. The back section of each boot cover is quilted with layer of batting and they are lined all the way around, and close with velcro which hooks under the heel.
Wig:
The wig is a “Glinda” from Arda. I just rolled it up into three sock buns, and pulled a few pieces loose! I had wanted to add a lacefront but ran out of time; maybe one day.
Accessories:
The gunbelt is my husband’s Han belt. Thankfully due to its design it can be altered to fit others without damaging it, which is fantastic because it was expensive and getting to use it for two costumes make it that much more worth it! The gloves I made using the Vogue glove pattern and they were a butt and I don’t want to talk about them.
