Made for: Halloween 2006

Background: My family and friends wanted to do a Wizard of Oz group for Halloween since we have a cairn terrier like Toto.

Patterns Used: Simplicity 7808

Dress:

This was a pretty quick costume. I used the Simplicity Wizard of Oz pattern for the dress and didn’t deviate from the pattern at all, very straight-forward. The fabric was all fairly cheap stuff from Hancock’s – blue and white checked cotton for the dress, white cotton for the top, with rick-rack around the neck and sleeves.

Shoes:

The shoes I bought, they’re just the commercially available costume shoes. I didn’t like how they were missing the sequins on the heels, so I added more to them.

Accessories:

I made the hair bow out of sequin dot fabric, and the basket (and fake Toto) I bought on ebay. When we shot this on the white backdrop a few years later, I braided my Belle wig and wore that instead. This was a whole lot easy than doing my own hair in either of the styles she wears in the movie.

History:

I didn’t wear this for yeaaars after I made it. It got put in a bin and kinda forgotten about. In 2017 I got it out, cleaned it up, braided the wig as I mentioned above and shot it on the white backdrop. I also wore it for Halloween that year, and I’ve had it out a few more times around Halloween since then – most recently I wore it to visit my grandma in her care home for Halloween and all the old folks loved it! That was so much! Also it was originally a little too big and baggy on me in 2006, and now it magically fits beautifully LOL
