Disgust – Inside Out

Made for: MidSouthCon 2016

Background: Green is my fav colour, I loved the midcentury vibe of her outfit, and, well, I think I’m more of a Disgust than a Joy most of the time, haha.

Patterns Used:
Simplicity 8051 (dress -altered), Simplicity 4433 (pants)

Wig:

The wig is an Arda Vivien in dark green. It’s a little darker than I should have gone with, but I really really love the colour. I trimmed it, and added 2 skeins of metallic green embroidery floss to the wig cap. The embroidery floss didn’t really work out as well as I hope – it was very easy to thread and tie into the wig cap, and it looks great when the light is directly hitting it, but otherwise I feel like it’s too subtle. I may go back and add tinsel like others have done for their Inside Out wigs.

Make-up:

As always with body paint costumes, I used Ben Nye Magicake Aqua Paints. I only painted my arms, chest and face – for my legs, I used We Love Color’s tights in mint. I added a little bit of my make-up to them to help them match my painted skintone better.

Originally, I had bought 2 pairs of tights intending to turn one into gloves for my arms/chest the way I’ve seen other people do with tights. I started trying to sew the finger channels and said you know what, nope, I don’t feel like doing this, I’d rather paint my arms than go through making gloves LOL

Since I made this We Love Colors now has so many more arm/glove/full body options and whenever I have the chance to rewear this, I’ll probably invest in something new for it so I only have to paint my face and neck.

Accessories:

Shoes were from ebay. The scarf is made of some pink glittery netting I got at the fabric store. The petticoat I’m wearing underneath the dress is my Briar Rose petticoat. I had intended to make a petticoat to match this, because I knew the Briar Rose petticoat was too long. But I started running short on time and tried the Briar Rose petticoat on underneath it, and just rolled the top hem up – and it worked pretty well. So yay, a time-saver! It tended to slip down a bit, and it’s showing in most of my photos, so I’ll have to revisit that before I wear it again.

The leggings/pants I made using Simplicity 3344, I like this pattern because it’s super simple and quick way to make some fitted pants. I used some green spandex I had leftover from my Rogue as Ms Marvel costume in 2014, and some elastic for the waistband that I had in my stash.

The belt I made using a piece of scrap leather leftover from other projects as a base. I picked up a green vinyl at Joann and made a casing for the leather. Then I made trim for the edges using the selvage edge of what was left of my green spandex (though the selvage part is on the backside). I tried to sew this on with my machine — my machine was fine with sewing through the leather and vinyl, but I was having too much trouble keeping the spandex in the correct place as it sewed through all of that. So I hand-stitched it in place instead. The “D” belt buckle my husband made out of foam.

As of 2025, the vinyl I used for the belt is starting to tear up. Bummer since I’ve only worn this the one time and now I’ll have to replace part of the belt for a second wearing.

Dress:

I picked up a few yards of a lightweight green crepe for the dress. It’s a little more on the blue side of green than I really wanted it, but I thought it was pretty so I got it. I used Simplicity 8051 for the majority of it – I used the back pieces, waistband, and skirt pieces. I drafted new front chest pieces for the v-neck collar, and lined the bodice.

Once I had all of the pieces basically put together, I went out and got some pale blue and green embroidery floss, sat on my couch and embroidered the designs on. It took about 2 1/2 weeks. (I had originally wanted to just buy somebody’s fabric design off spoonflower, but that was more money than I wanted to spend.) Once I got it finished, I got the lining in the bodice, sewed the skirt pieces onto the top, and hemmed the skirt and got the zipper and hook-and-eyes installed. After wearing it, I realized I needed to take up the shoulder seams a bit – the front and back pieces are a little saggy looking which should be an easy fix for next time I wear it.

History:

This was a really fun costume. Needs a few tweaks before I wear it again (especially taking up those shoulder seams), and it was very much an experimental build, but overall I’m really happy with it.
