Ok so I probably SHOULD classify this as a 2018 costume since the bulk of the work was done on it then, but I didn’t wear the actual finished thing til 2019, so there.

Shirt:
I bought a cheap purple knit online at the same time I was ordering something else, just hoping it might work. It came and was actually really nice! It had a really nice drape. I had a shirt in my closet that was really similar to what I wanted my Ariel shirt to look like/fit like, so I used that as a pattern to cut my fabric. It’s only 2 pieces – front and back.

Once I had the two panels sewn together, I hemmed them and then started working up the text/trim in photoshop. I printed the front panels out on normal paper first to get the sizing right, then printed them on heat-transfer paper (I used “dark” fabric transfer paper.)

I cut each line out and applied them separately, being careful not to touch the iron to finished pieces. The knit fabric changed colour when high heat was applied, which was so weird! But then it changed back when it cooled. I did have some bleed-through of purple on my white letters, but for a quick project I wasn’t going to cry about it.

For the trim, I drew up small seashells in photoshop and printed a bunch off on one transfer page. I cut each one and applied them one at a time, along the neckline, hem and sleeve hems. This detail wasn’t shown on the collectible figure or doll, but it did look like it was there on the concept art, and I liked it, so I included it.

Shorts:
Originally I was going to make a pair of shorts, but time was running short so I just bought a pair on amazon. They arrived and were…. way too big. And incredibly unflattering. LOL. And then looking at the weather for our then-upcoming December 2018, it wasn’t going to be shorts weather, anyway – way too cold for shorts! So I wore jeans with the shirt for that first trip.

So with our April 2019 trip coming up, I again didn’t have time to mess with making a pair of shorts, so I decided to dig out the giant, ugly amazon pair and see what I could do to them. If it didn’t work, I’d buy another pair, but if it did, I didn’t have to waste money on another pair, right? So i cut off some of the length on them, and then seam-ripped the center seam open from front to back. Started working it in until it fit me correctly, sewed the seam closed, trimmed the excess, and rehemmed them. Overall worked pretty good!

History: This was probably the most comfortable “disneybound” I’ve done, the loose fitting shirt and shorts made for a comfy park day outfit. Maybe eventually I can upgrade the shorts – but I dunno if I’ll ever add a wig, since I’m really just considering this a park outfit and not a con outfit.
