Wonder Woman – DC Comics (new52 version)

Made for: Halloween 2011

Background: I got really interested in this costume before Dragoncon – I think it was the bodice that did it for me. Didn’t have time to squeeze it in for Dragoncon, so I did it for GMX/Halloween.

Bodice:

Since I have a new little camera I took a LOT of progress pics of this one, really tried to document it better than I normally do. The bodice I made using a my fav bodice pattern, Simplicity 5006. It’s 3 layers – one of cotton (lining), one of canvas (interior strength layer) and one of matte satin (outer fashion layer). I sewed the canvas & cotton layerstogether and added the boning channels and boning, and also added built-in bra cups.

I took my outer fashion fabric matte satin layer and drew my stitch lines onto the back, and followed them on my machine to sew on the decorative lines.

After I pinned the 3 sections together I really wasn’t happy with the matte satin, it was just too shiny. So I went back and looked at the fabric store again and found what I originally wanted and didn’t see the first time, the same fabric I used for my 2009 Wonder Woman bodice. So I recut it out of that, and did the decorative stitch lines again. I reinforced the shape of the stars with some hand-sewing and a thicker embroidery floss, then put the whole thing together. Put the grommets in the back and it was finished, except for armor connectors.

Shorts:

The bottoms I made using navy blue spandex, out of a swimsuit pattern. I couldn’t find stars large enough, so I cut stars out of my old Wonder Woman star fabric and sewed them in place. I also bought a pair of navy blue tights to wear in case it was cold, so I could have the pants-version too. Didn’t have time to do the stitching on them, that’ll be later.

Boots:

For the boots I bought a pair of boots online, made boot covers and added the white stripes. Honestly they were some of the most annoying boot covers I ever had to make, because the base boots were slouchy and made things difficult to fit. I won’t get another pair like that.

Armor Pieces:

My husband made the chestpiece, belt, neckband, armbands and tiara out of plastic! The belt is permanently glued in place in the front, and velcros closed in the back, and the chestpiece snaps in place onto the bodice. We’ve had issues with the snaps on the chestpiece staying put – they keep coming off, so another glue is in order one of these days.

Etc:

The wig is my Hippolyta wig without the ponytail. I’d love to get a different, bigger wig for this one day. The gauntlets and lasso are both from my 2009 Wonder Woman. No point re-inventing the wheel there.

History:

I wore this for a while at Halloween, and for a photoshoot and that’s IT! I’ve got to find another excuse to wear this sometime. I tried to wear it again for Halloween 2017, but the chestpiece snaps popped off as I was putting it on so I had to change back out of it and wear something else.

I do have a slight beef with this costume which may be why I haven’t worn it much — I think the bodice is too long on me and throws off the proportions. I wish the sides came closer to my natural waist and the front was like, 2 inches shorter. But with the grommets already being in in the back and all of the decorative stitching, I’m not sure it would be possible to do that edit – it’d probably be easier to just make a new bodice all together! (which is tempting, because I’d love to redo this and make it look more like armor with more apparent decorative stitching… but I don’t know that I’ll ever get back around to this. If I do another WW, it’ll probably be the movie version….)
