Rogue – X-Men (Shi’ar Suit)
Made for: Dragoncon 2011
Background: I decided to do this particular Rogue costume because I’ve always liked it; and I had a few pieces I could already use to make it.

Patterns Used:

Suit:
I bought spandex online, and ended up not being happy with the colour of it (despite picking it out of fabric samples I’d gotten) – decided it was too light. So I dyed all the pieces I’d already cut and my excess fabric darker and I was much happier. I used a pattern for the basic unitard – edited to get rid of the front seam and to make seams where the legs join.
The yellow ribbed pieces I made of strips of yellow stretch knit and attached to a backing, then sewed onto the suit before I assembled it all. It zips up the back.
Shoes:
The shoes were some cheap shoes I bought ages ago and never used – I repainted the sole and covered them in my fabric. Because they are so heavy I decided to not attach them to the suit and leave them as a separate piece. Unfortunately at the con the heel broke away from the shoe with only my spandex cover keeping in place. I never have been able to get it fixed, I’ve tried all kinds of glue and nothing holds… and as a result I’ve hardly gotten to wear this costume.
Armor Pieces:
My husband made the collar, shoulder pieces, wrist, hand and hip pieces out of foam, they all velcro on. The shoulder pieces he also made out of plastic pieces, they fit a little funny and I’d like to add straps to keep them in place a little better.
Wig/Accessories:
I added the belt (covered in my spandex) with the X-buckle and side armor panels – she doesn’t actually have a belt with the suit but it made it easier to attach the side pieces to, and adding the buckle gave it some recognition. The white wig is from my AOA Rogue, paired with a clip-on ponytail I already had.
History:
It’s a neat costume to have done. The shoe issue was a bummer though. I put it on for the first time at Dragoncon 2011 and the shoe came apart before I even left the room, so we just took some pics out in the hallway, then I took it off. There was no way I could walk around in it. I’ve tried multiple ways to fix the shoe and nothing has held. I did do a white backdrop shoot with it, but I don’t have any other plans. Maybe it’s time to sell it, but I dunno who would want it with the bum shoe.

Please note that none of these costumes are for sale! This is my personal portfolio.
