Poison Ivy – DC Comics (Ame-Comi)

Made for: Dragoncon 2009

Background: I love this little elvish-looking version of Poison Ivy, plus I realised it was a way I could reuse my Starfire wig from the year before. (banner photo by Orobouros!)

Bikini:

I had enough leaves still leftover from my previous Poison Ivy to do most of the work on the top and the bottoms, I just painted them with a wash of bronze and darker green. I bought a bra and covered it in the leaves, along with a swimsuit bottom for the bottoms. I made the half skirt/butt-flap for the back section out of suede and covered it in leaves, also.

Boots:

The boots were a pair of boots I already had, I made boot covers for them out of some leftover green suede. I bought a lot of moss and vine-y looking stuff from the craft store and glued, stapled, hand-sewed, whatever I could do make them stay on the boot covers LOL. Occasionally some of the excess moss would come off as I walked while wearing it, so you could tell where I’d been LOL

Vines:

The back piece I designed a frame for, and my husband made it for me out of heat-formed plastic. I took a couple of big vines I bought, added some more vines and leaves, and wired them onto the frame. The frame ties onto some D-rings I sewed onto the bikini top. A lot of it ended up being fairly last minute because I spent so much time fooling with the boot covers, I didn’t even know if I would finish it all in time. But I did – don’t know if I’ll wear it again but it was fun šŸ™‚

Bodypaint:

Ben Nye Magic Cake Aqua Paints. So originally, I had bought a white bodysuit to dye, and my plan was to have that attach to the bra band, so everything from the bra band down would be the bodysuit, and I would paint everything upwards (arms, chest, neck, face). Just to cut down on the amount of painting I’d have to do. My white bodysuit came in, I painted my arm with my makeup as a swatch, and dyed the bodysuit to match. Once it dried I painted my arm again and put the bodysuit on and it was a great match. I cut the top of the bodysuit off and had it all ready to go.

I get to Dragoncon and start painting. I go to put my bodysuit on and look in the mirror and it does. not. match. I don’t know if maybe I got the makeup mix wrong (I was using I think like 3 different greens for shadows/highlights/base), or it was the lighting, or what, but I had to make the call to dump the bodysuit, because it just didn’t look right. I had to very quickly have my husband and best friend help me paint my stomach/back/legs because I had a photoshoot to get to. As a result of the time crunch it wasn’t perfect but at least it all matched.

Also I have no idea whatever happened to that green bodysuit. Where’d it go? I have never seen it again. Did I get so mad I put it in the trash can in the hotel room? It’s a possibility LOL.

Anyway, one of these days I’m going to invest in one of those We Love Colors bodysuits for my Disgust costume, and also to get this shot on the white backdrop.

History:

I’ve never worn it again because that’s a lot of body paint to get into. Once I do, as mentioned above, and I can get the white backdrop photoshoots, I’ll probably throw all this away, because I don’t think anyone would want to buy a bag of fabric, moss and plastic leaves LOL
