Magik – The New Mutants (Illyana Rasputin/Darkchilde)

Background: I’ve had this on my “want” list for SO long! I had originally had it on my list for Dragoncon 2003! To finally be able to do it was awesome 🙂

I wanted to do this costume for YEARSSS. I’d been obsessed with this look since I was a teenager so this was one of those costume obsessions for me that pre-dated me even getting into costuming. But I never knew how to tackle it. Then my husband came along with ideas…!

Armor:

My husband made the armor for me. All of the “armored” body parts were vac-formed plastic made off of my bodycast, and painted silver. He also made the shoulder pieces, which are also plastic. (Because it was a different sort of plastic, the paint looks different, which is something I’d like to get matched up better.) All of the pieces velcro onto my silver bodysuit. It’s all pretty lightweight, the only “pinch” point… are the pinch points LOL Like where two pieces get close together and as you move, they can kinda pinch me. Also just getting it all on is a slog. Everything is labeled on the inside but still.

Undersuit:

I bought a silver leotard and silver leggings online. I just had to go through and sew on all the velcro for the armor pieces, and the attachment for the tail.

Helmet:

The helmet was made based off a kid’s plastic helmet, with extra pieces added on to create the right shape, along with spikes and my horns. I bought the horns online and repainted them – they velcro onto the helmet for easier transport, but I’d like to get them fitted to the helmet a little better, I don’t like how the velcro makes them stick up from it a bit.

Accessories:

The boots I bought online, the wig was one I already had. The sword was a kid’s foam sword that my husband repainted and added pieces to. The tail was a piece of hollow vinyl piping, covered in black suede which I painted red highlights onto. The point of the tail was made of foam, also covered in black suede.

History:

So excited to have finally done this costume after wanting it for years. I’d like to do a few tweaks to it before I wear it again.

2025 Update: As of 2025, I’ve only worn this one other time, for the white backdrop photoshoot. I’ve been trying to sell it for years but nobody ever bites LOL. It just takes up too much room in my house and I doubt I will ever wear it again at this point. Please if you are interested in this costume, hit me up, I will make you a deal!
