Dark Phoenix – X-Men
Made for: San Diego Comic Con 2004
Background: One of the earliest Marvel storylines I read; I thought this would be fun to do.
Journal Entries: Read more at my Dark Phoenix tag
Patterns Used: None
Bodysuit: I decided to go with a black suit (bought online) and to try to airbrush red highlights on it – once I got the suit I realised it wouldn’t work that way so I just left it black. The phoenix symbol I made by drawing up a pattern and cutting it out of spandex, then heat bonded it onto a black triangle, then sewed the triangle onto the suit.
Gloves/Boots: The boots I made by buying a pair of heels and covering them in the same yellow spandex. I sewed the upper part of the boots to the bodysuit, and finished the edge at the ankle. So they are two pieces – from the ankle up is part of the bodysuit, and the shoes slide on separately. The gloves I made using a pattern I found online, and they were HARD to make – yellow spandex.
Accessories: The sash was just a long tube of fabric. The wig was the second wig I bought for it – I got it on ebay. I started with a different wig and it was just too curly.
History: In 2006, I changed this to red-suited Phoenix when I started using the black suit as the undersuit for my Stormtrooper – funny thing was, even though the red was now the “correct” colour, I got called Spider-Woman more than Phoenix in that version. Makes me wish I still had my black version intact.
