its the most wonderful time of the year

I had an instagram story memory pop up yesterday that this time last year I said “dragoncon season is officially starting for me today.”

That made me feel really good because I have a huge head start this year compared to last. Rebels Leia is nearly done, and I’ve got a good chunk of Nadja done now too!

So yeah I had a very fruitful sewing weekend. Chase was gone to a video shoot all Saturday morning, and then we didn’t go anywhere yesterday so I really dug in.

Ok let’s rewind and start back on Monday.

Went to see GOTG 3. I think we need to continue seeing new releases on a Monday or Tuesday night. There was only a handful of other people in the theater and it was a much more chill experience. No people talking, on their phones, etc.

I did enjoy the movie, but the animal cruelty scenes were hard to watch. Will be fast forwarding thru those when I watch in the future.

Next I got my Nadja mock-up taken in and test fit:

Cute

And my spoonflower fabric arrived!

I got it washed and dried as soon as it hit my doorstep.

Double checked the width of the ribbon I needed for the stripes with some leftover ribbon I had – decided 1/4 was right and got that ordered.

And then starting getting panels cut!

My ribbon arrived late last week and I started getting the stripes sewn on:

Chase took Friday off so we could go get our passports before the post office closed. (They have such weird hours??)

Stopped and got a happy meal along the way and I got the best toy option.

By Friday night I was done sewing stripes on all the bodice and sleeve pieces:

My goal for Saturday while Chase was gone was to get the bodice and sleeves assembled.

And i got part of the way there. Bodice is assembled, lining cut and I got one sleeve assembled… But I wasn’t totally happy with the lower part of the sleeve. So instead of starting on sleeve 2 I decided to move onto the upper skirt and think about the sleeve before doing anymore there.

So upper skirt is what i worked on the rest of saturday and all day sunday…

First 3 panels

And as of Sunday mid-day:

Since that pic I’ve done 4 more panels – I’ve just got the last 2 back ones left to cut, sew stripes on, and sew together.

The pattern matching is killing me. It’s such a pain in the ass and uses up way too much fabric. I thought I overbought a bit to compensate but apparently not – I have enough fabric left for 1 of the back upper skirt panels and nothing for the underskirt. And nothing if I decide I need to recut the lower sleeves. So I got more ordered yesterday and here’s hoping it comes fast because I was really hoping to have this finished by end of May.

For the underskirt I’m not planning to do the whole thing in the spoonflower fabric – just the visible parts. And thankfully that part is just straight of grain, no bias, having to cut it at weird angles. So I’m hoping just needing to do the lower part of the skirt, maybe 2 yards will do? I ordered 5 more total, 1.5 for the last upper skirt panel and the other 1.5 will be in case I need to recut the sleeves.

So in the mean time going to make the upper section of the lower skirt – I have a bunch of red lining material I can use for that. Get that ready to go for when the spoonflower fabric arrives. Get the lining for the bodice assembled, lining for the upper skirt section cut. And maybe do a new pattern and mock-up for the lower sleeve. I need to think about it some more.

So despite the fabric set back I’m overall pretty happy with the progress thus far. I’m hoping to be done enough by end of May I could move on to Breha pretty cleanly for June and maybe have that finished by July?

Then that would leave 2 whole months to help Chase with his costume and maybe also do the 2 other costume possibilities I wanted to do (7 of 9 or Jedi Training Flashback Leia). We’ll see, have to take stock of my costume budget too because having to order more fabric for that put me over budget for that project.

So my goals this week:
Finish lining for bodice and upper skirt for Nadja
pattern new lower sleeve
Assemble upper portion of lower skirt

I guess before I do that I need to figure out what shoes I’m wearing for the hem. Hmm too bad all my witchy boots have died over the last few years.

Random tv thoughts – spoilers for Ted Lasso…

We’re nearly caught up on Ted Lasso season 3. One episode behind. I really loved the first 2 seasons but this season has been so weird, narratively-speaking. Why are the “main” characters all going in different directions and not really interacting with each other? Why spend 2 seasons making us love Rory and Keeley only to break them up in the first episode of season 3 and then they act like it never happened? What was the point of the Shandy storyline? I don’t care about Jack because I’m still reeling from the completely random breakup in episode 1? What exactly is going on with Rebecca, why this “prophecy” from a psychic that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere? The random hookup was nice but apparently isn’t going anywhere? Ted doesn’t seem to be doing anything but obsessing over the therapist and doesn’t really seem to be doing much coaching? What was the point of the Zava storyline? Why the extremely long scene of the players all deleting nudes off their phones? What is going on with Nate? Because outside of the endearing dating storyline he’s still being a dick and there seems to be no resolution?

That’s my main issue, all of this new stuff was introduced, all the characters seem to be doing their own things independently of each other, but there’s no resolution, there’s no coming back together. I guess maybe a theme of learning about yourself without relying on someone else? But it looks like there’s only 3 episodes left and not a lot of time to pull all this back together into a neat storyline. I told Chase it feels meandering with no point.

Anyway that’s my rant, I don’t normally do that kind of thing but it feels like a letdown after the last 2 seasons. Let’s see where we land in 3 weeks.
