Today I’m starting out with the non-sewing stuff.
Friday was Kevin’s birthday! He had just gotten back from his summer camp that day and his mom invited us over for spaghetti (his fav) and cake.
Saturday night we took Kevin out for dinner at Celtic Crossing and to see a showing of 1984 Dune at the Pink Palace imax.
They had a display of art and props from the movie:
Then we got to hear artist Ron Miller talk about his experience as production artist for the movie. Very cool.
It was fun to see the movie on a big screen.
Sunday we were home all day, getting the house ready for guests – and I went on a search for my Skateland birthday party. Had been wanting to rewatch it ever since the Rink-o-Mania scenes in Stranger Things.
It was impossible to get decent photos – scan lines kept getting in the way. Chase is going to get it transferred to digital for me.
But there’s me and Kevin. Not much has changed, we just got bigger.
That’s all I have for non-sewing this week. Otherwise I’ve been working on these Padme sleeves or cleaning the house non-stop.
I also made some new pillow cases for some old boring throw pillows.
Last night I thought I had finally finished the Padme sleeves.
If you’ll remember last week I was waiting on my button kit to arrive. It got here Tuesday and I got all my buttons made and also got the button loops made. Got the first cuff assembled Wednesday. Then decided to make new ones. Why? I had ironed on interfacing to the first pair, and I felt like it made them look crumpled like paper when they bent. So I started over on Thursday. Left the interfacing off and just flat-lined them using some of the same heavier twill I used as the lining of the bodice. Also took the opportunity to make new piping for the end – I first covered some existing piping in my velvet, but decided that was too chunky so replaced it with just a tube of the velvet and no piping inside.
So I finished up the new cuffs Saturday then started getting them attached to the sleeve. Got them sewn on once and didn’t like the placement, so took them off and put them on again. Seemed right so I spent ages finishing the inside edge by hand and getting everything pressed and then got them sewn onto the under bodice.
I put the bodice on and stood there staring at them and decided I still wasn’t happy with the cuff placement. I think it’s because I was getting them placed while I didn’t have the sleeves attached to anything at the top. So last night after those photos I took the cuffs off again and tonight I’ll be hopefully getting them repositioned one more time. I really dont want to have to do all the interior hand-finishing again.
My velvet for the bodice arrived! As soon as I finish these sleeves I’ll go back to finishing my mock-up/pattern for the vest and then I’ll be starting on the vest.
I also got the base trim for making my Jessica “crop top” last week but haven’t even really looked at it. Been so busy with sleeves.
I feel like I’m in a really good place with both costumes. At this point all that’s left with Jessica is all the beadwork and like 5% sewing (putting zipper in/hemming). Padme is finishing up these sleeves, the vest is obviously the major thing, and once I have the vest mostly finished I can finish the skirt waistband. Then of course the beaded/embroidered panel.
I had wanted to be mostly finished the bulk of sewing these 2 costumes by the end of June and while I’m not quite there, I’m decently close. If I can get these cuffs back on and finished today then focus on the vest the rest of the week I might be at the point I was aiming for by Thursday. Who knows!
In other news, hung a bunch of art that was overdue to be hung as part of the “getting the house ready” initiative. Got 2 things up in my work office and more stuff add to my sewing room hallway and the disney staircase.
And my poor Mema had to go to the ER saturday -turns out she has shingles š Yesterday was my grandpa’s birthday and I called to tell him happy bday – he sounded tired. Of course I may have woken him up – I did call at 6:30 and he often goes to bed at like 5:30 LOL
Next week’s post will be delayed by the 3 day weekend so see you Tuesday.
