It’s another Monday where I feel like I have nothing to show for the past week. On Saturday I was thinking about what I was going to post today — like what have I done all week?? I couldn’t think of anything!
On Monday last week i did finish up my Wanda shirt. I’m still on the fence about posting pics because I feel like it doesn’t look as good on camera as it does in real life catching the light. I plan to do a try on of all of my new disney trip stuff this weekend when everything is mostly finished so I may just wait until then to show it — when I have lights and everything set up and can at least take some photos with the timer of it on me.
The rest of the week I messed around with my Amidala ears, though I didn’t actually get properly started on them til Friday.
I decided I wanted to do a naboo symbol in the center of the beading, so it would be more “Padme” to the average Star Wars fan. Initially I was going to do the beading and everything right on the furry ear panels but after doing a test of that decided it wasn’t feasible. Surprisingly the black glitter HTV stuck to the furry fabric just fine. But that ended up covered up when I just made new separate appliques, as seen here. Just used some black felt I had.
The basic felt applique with the black glitter naboo symbol and the beading on the edge.
I first started out doing the gold “embroidered” sections with the same stuff I’d used on the actual costume which was a gold cord, but it just wasn’t cooperating. So I went and bought some gold embroidery floss which was a lot easier to work with. (I still like the brighter metallic look of the cord on the costume, but to make life easier on this smaller scale — embroidery floss is fine)
Then I went around the naboo shape with gold seed beads.
Then started doing the beading in the other areas. I didn’t do the exact same shapes from costume appliques – I wanted it to have the same feel but simplified, so I just did rows of these copper beads.
And then finished it out with rows of bugle beads and the white beads.
Sewed them to the ears
Added some of the gold trim in the seam and got them sewn to the headband
Bow is the black silk
I had to REALLY reinforce these ears on the headband because the beading made them a little front-heavy, they were wanting to lean forward a bit. So if you just hold them up, the ears look like they bend back a little now because of how much re-inforcement I did in the back. But on my head they now stand up straight.
Also the applique placement is definitely “sisters, not twins” and I’m really thinking about cutting them off and sewing them back on the finished ears so I can get them a litte more even. I think I could do it without disassembling if I sew them back on with my curved needle.
I may be overthinking it. Going to sit on it for a bit.
In other news, the bag from China arrived Saturday!! Thank goodness it didn’t take til April 25 to get here.
When I opened it up it STUNK, like a bad chemically smell, so it got to sit outside for a while.
So what am I doing with this? Here’s a hint
Hoping to finish it up tonight.
But I need a different handle for it. I want like a really short strap because I dont want a shoulder strap interfering with my shawl. The strap that came with it is not adjustable, so I guess I’m on the hunt for a new strap. Or figuring out how to modify the one it came with.
Also in the mail Saturday was another swatch for Padme:
This one was a winner too.
Now I just need to order that, and get my swatches for the velvet. Also need a lining fabric for the sleeves. But a good start.
I guess I’ll eventually be making packing padme ears too.
I have one from each prequel movie now. I do want to eventually have ears for each Padme I’ve done. In some cases I have fabric leftover I can use but for most of them I don’t, so it’ll just be do something I do as I can.
This coming Saturday is Midtown Con and I’ve been deadset on wearing Diane (Twin Peaks) since I first heard about it because it’s taking place at Black Lodge and I wanted pics in their Twin Peaks photo booth. Even though Diane isn’t really that eye-catching of a costume, I wanted to do it wear it FOR ME lol. But looking at the weather forecast it’s only supposed to be like 55 degrees that day which would be a little chilly for Diane. If it stays around 60 or lower I’m probably going to switch to Wanda and just wear Diane to some other event at Black Lodge so I can take pics in the photobooth. Wanda would be more fun, but it means I need to do some small repairs – reapply some glue mostly. (This is why I don’t like glue!)
Forecast right now is high of 55 Saturday and high of 69 on Sunday. With that being 5 days out it could go either way.
Anyway I leave you with this photo of Luna watching a commercial.
