Well right about now we should had been nearing the Florida border on our way to Disney World. We would have left after work yesterday and spent tonight at our first ever Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. Yesterday we would have spent at Epcot Food and Wine with my cousins, aunt and uncle, and Saturday we would have gone to California Grill. Come home Sunday.
But as of noon yesterday we decided we had to cancel because of the hurricane. On the grand scale of things, canceling a Disney vacation is nothing next to the damage the hurricane has (and will) actually cause as it moves northward, but it was a huge heartbreak for us as this trip in particular was one we’d been looking forward to out of all of them. We’d been trying to get down to Disney in October for years but with the money pit of Dragon Con we were never able to do it, and being able to do MNSSHP and meet up with my cousins were the two big things we were excited to finally do.
We had to look at it objectively though – maybe if it were just the 2 of us going, it wouldn’t have been so bad, but Kevin was of course going with us, and we had to take his parents feelings into consideration and they were really, really worried. We were also concerned about gas as well, since we were driving in – I’ve already heard of long gas station lines and shortages as people are trying to leave the area.
Waking up this morning and hearing they’d moved guests out of the campgrounds and canceled tonight’s party made me feel a little better about our decision. My cousins are still going and I hope the rain isn’t bad at all for them and they have a great time, and hopefully we can plan something again next year with them.
Disney was super helpful about everything. We were able to rebook for a couple of weeks out — they canceled and refunded our party tickets and bought new ones, everything is squared away. Even our overnight GA hotel was able to move our reservation out with no penalties (we had to switch cities tho – our normal place was totally booked up for some reason, not a big deal or time difference in driving).
The only thing we couldn’t rebook was California Grill, which is a bummer but I think we are going to do Hoop de Doo instead, so that will be fun.
In lighter news…. no, you know what, I’m going to save the lighter news for a second post, because there’s a ton of crap I want to share.
