A stroke of luck

So back to the saga of my Rapunzel’s mom costume (ok I Just googled it and apparently the king and queen finally have names thanks to the upcoming cartoon series? King Frederic and Queen Arianna. Thank goodness, that’s so much easier to say than “my Rapunzel’s mom costume.”)

Friday night I went and dug out the pattern I wanted to use for it, to see if the scrap of fabric I had leftover was enough to get all of the pieces cut out of.

Well, the bodice pieces were missing out of that pattern! I remembered a few years ago I started to use it for a project I never finished, so I figured, the pattern pieces must be with that. I went hunting for those unfinished pieces… and lo and behold…

The bodice I’d started putting together for that unfinished costume was lined in the fabric I am currently trying to use. What a stroke of luck!!

I did have to take it all apart. The reason I abandoned the project was that the interfacing I used was way too heavy and didn’t look right (you can’t see it here, it’s sewn into what was supposed to be the “right side” fabric). And the stitching on the lining (what will now be my main fabric) was never meant to be seen, so I needed to take that out and clean it up. Besides, I need to dye it all. Hoping to be able to do that tonight…

But now that I have my bodice pieces all ready to go, with the boning even already cut. This means I very nearly have everything I need for the costume in my stash.

I will still need:
Fabric/notions for the crown
Findings for the necklace
zipper
Fabric paint for front panel
lining material for skirt (I probably do have something I can use, haven’t looked for that yet)
Fabric for faux underskirt

whoo hoo! Plenty of time to find all that, and now plenty to work with without spending any money. I’ve got leftover Edith fabric I can use for the sleeve puffs and some scrap darker purple fabric for the trim.

Speaking of spending money, Joann’s McCalls sale was this weekend, so we ran over there just so I could pick up a few things for my collection.

I have absolutely no plans of making a Rey costume, but I wanted it just to have it. The open cage hoopskirt was too interesting to pass up, and the other was just a random pretty. They were out of a few things I wanted, but this was good enough. Butterick was also on sale but didn’t have much of anything I just HAD to have. When is the Simplicity sale? I have like 10 Simplicity patterns I want…
