So far all of my Dragoncon 2003 stories sound a whole lot like whining. I promise you that isn’t true. All of these stories make me laugh, then and now.
But just to balance out some of the whining-type stories, here’s a less complain-y one.
Dragoncon 2002, Ash and I had missed out on Evening at Bree. We had wanted to go, gone downstairs and stood in line, but after a volunteer moved the line and we ended up at the end of it, we said Nah and went about our usual wandering instead.
So we really wanted to go in 2003, especially since it had moved into one of the larger rooms. I put on my admittedly inaccurate Arwen Chase costume that I’d made for Halloween the year before, just to go enjoy the dancing and music.
And enjoy the dancing and music we did!
Well, Cath decided that I just HAD to enter the costume contest they were having with my Arwen costume. I didn’t really want to; I hadn’t come for that. She bugged me enough that I told her that if she went over and signed me up and got me a number, I’d do it. So she did.
The costume contest was just folks walking across the dance floor, doing a little twirl or bow in front of the judges, and that was it. Simple stuff, didn’t take very long, no pressure.
Well a while later, we’re lined up as they get around to announcing the winners. The contest was divided into 2 categories – elves, and then everybody else. They go through the Elf winners, and I’m just standing there clapping for everybody. They announce that the 1st place winner is #7, and I just clap without thinking, until it sinks it that I’M #7. Huh wait what?
It was honestly the best prize I’ve won in a costume contest, and I didn’t even want to enter. I won a gorgeous Sideshow Frodo statue which still to this day is proudly on display in my kitchen. And to think I didn’t even want to enter.
