So this morning, laying in bed, 5:30 AM, I had a brainstorm about my sewing room.
It’s cluttered. It’s a mess. I have no space. It’s been a disaster area since Dragoncon – I attempted to unpack in there, got halfway through and ended up with stuff strewn everywhere. On top of going through to find stuff to sell, it’s a mess.
Beyond the mess, it’s not really well organized. I keep chipping away at one problem or another (I can’t get to my fabric, I have no room in my closet, I have nowhere to put my patterns, etc) but something else always comes up. The truth of the matter is that it’s too small a room, and this is really too small of a house for us.
ANYWAY, the brainstorm. I have several pieces of furniture still at my parents house. Two of them are just hanging out in the garage, and they’ve probably been in the garage for close to 20 years now. One is a yellow chest-of-drawers that was in my room when I was little. The other is a large wardrobe, straight out of the 70s, that was a hand-me-down from an uncle when I was a teenager. (I also have a matching desk in the attic somewhere which I want whenever we move to that bigger house I keep thinking about). I always thought it was ugly, and when I was in high school my parents replaced all that furniture with new stuff.
The wardrobe is dull yellow, with green trim. Think 70s yellow and green. That’s why I thought it was ugly, but underneath that it’s really cool.
My plan is to get those two pieces, rearrange my office and get them in there. After they get painted, of course.
The wardrobe will replace random black shelf in my office. It will also give me a place to hang whatever I’m currently working on, instead of having a big bulk of stuff hanging off the back of my office door. It’s got several drawers so I can move a lot of stuff from the shelf and elsewhere into it. It’s got a neat little window on it that has some (very aged) fabric curtains, I’m going to make some cute new ones 🙂
The chest-of-drawers (which is blindingly bright yellow right now, I plan to paint it blue), will go where my tv-stand/pattern bins are (the tv stand will move over to the other side of my office). I’m going to put all my extra fabric in there. Then I can get all those storage tubs of fabric out of my closet, and have more room for hanging costumes, and storing other stuff.
I’m really excited and can’t wait to start on it.
