I was cutting fabric on the floor of my office last night, and it got me thinking of my old workspace at my parent’s house (where I had a table to cut fabric). I thought I’d post them all.
From 2001-2008 I worked out of the dining room at my parent’s house. I took it over! (sorry mom) I don’t have a good solid pic of it, but here’s a few:

The other side of the room:
See? A mess! LOL It didn’t always look like that last picture. But it was a nice workspace, I had bins set up around my mom’s china cabinet, a big window with a window seat, a large dining room table for working on stuff and cutting fabric, and a shelf for keeping patterns and things on. I’m really grateful that my parents put up with me turning that room into a mess every once in a while. Every one of my costumes were made up to Giselle was made in that dining room, with the only exception being Quistis and Sailor Jupiter (my first two costumes – made at my grandmother’s house.)
At one point we had the sewing machine around the corner in the entryway, which was weird, it didn’t stay there very long, but I remember that because it was the first time I got hit by a broken needle.
Next, from June 2008 to June 2009 I worked in the second bedroom of our apartment:
The hallway into the room, with a bathroom and a walk-in closet to the right:
My desk:
It functioned as both my workroom and our prop/geek room, as you can see. We never finished setting up the prop room, we just put a few things up and then realised we’re not staying here that long, so we stopped. The walk-in closet was AWESOME – I could fit almost everything in there, hanging up, too! I made everything from Poison Ivy-half of Marvel Girl and Anne Boleyn there.
It was a great sized room, I wish I could have kept it, plenty of room for laying fabric out and that desk (which was a hand-me-down) had plenty of storage space.
As we were packing up to move again, I tilted my bead drawer backwards as I was taping it up, and all my pearls spilt out. Everywhere! Even a month later as we were doing our final walk through, I ran my hand over the carpet and found a few more pearls that the vacuum hadn’t caught.
My 3rd workspace was mine from July-Sept 2009. It was my aunt’s playroom. And it was seriously the best workroom ever. I don’t have a lot of pics of it, mostly you can see it in the background of in-progress pics.
I had a fold out table with my machine on it in front of the windows (background of the last pic), all my bins and notions and things in the corner (second pic), and then I had plenty of room to spread out around a big armchair, a couch, and a tv (first pic).
I’m forever grateful to my aunt for letting us not only stay in her house for those few months (waiting to close on our house), but for letting me take over this room while working on dragoncon stuff!! (dragoncon makes the worst mess.)
I finished my Dragoncon 2009 costumes here – that was it.
I always thought what an amazing workspace I could make that room if it were mine, because it was huge. It had a closet, attic-access (via door, not stairs!), built-in shelves, hard wood floors (no needles hiding in carpet LOL), if I could have furnished as a sewing room it would have been the best, because even as a makeshift workspace it was great.
And finally – my office at our house. One of our requirements when house hunting was that it have 4 bedrooms – a master, a guest/prop room, an office for me and an office for Chase. We found that, thank goodness! It’s small and we have to be creative with storage, but at least we both have our own space. I need to take some new pics, but here’s what I have:
My desks, Chase made the extension and will be painting it white one day:
Most recent pic, the corner with my new tv stand/pattern storage/thingie:
It’s always a work in progress. But I’m so glad to have my own little space, where I don’t have to worry about making a mess in my parent’s house, I can set it up the way I want, and I don’t have to share it with Chase or all of our props and toys! LOL
