The Story:
Ok before I get into construction, I need to give you some history and explanation on this. Let’s go back to 2002, when we were all smack in the middle of LOTR fever. I made an Arwen Chase dress in October of 2002 and an Eowyn Shieldmaiden dress in December of 2002! An right in between those two I threw together a “Galadriel” costume. All it was was my (horrible) first Leia dress, a purple ribbon for a belt, my She-Ra wig and the Galadriel ring my cousin had given me for Christmas the year before. It was just for fun, I took some photos, and moved on. (And I’m not posting a picture of it here but if you really want to dig back in my blog I’m sure you can find one, LOL.)
Then in 2004, I was heading to SDCC for the first time and fell in with a group of LOTR costumers who were planning a skit for the masquerade. They already had an Arwen (two, actually), so since my white Arwen gown was an original design, I offered to wear it as Galadriel, with a long blonde (horrible) Godiva wig. (See above next to “Patterns” for construction details) It was literally just my Arwen dress and crown with a blonde wig, and again, the Galadriel ring my cousin had given me! I only wore it for the SDCC skit.
So that brings us to 2015. As I was making my Elf Queen Aelsa costume (from Thor), I thought it looked a lot like one of Galadriel’s dresses. So I constructed in a way that there were no ugly attachments or anything for the armor, so I could wear the dress plain for maybe eventually doing a Galadriel with it. What sealed the deal was the long blonde wig I got for my Edith costume in 2016 – I decided it was time to throw together the 3rd “half-assed Galadriel.”
Dress:
The dress is my Aelsa dress as I mentioned — you can click the link above by “Patterns” to read about the construction. It’s a silver velvet underdress with white chiffon over the top, and beading at the sleeve line. I did an experimental hem on this, and for the most part it has held up, though I did have quite a bit of fraying along the the bottom interior seams (in the train section, where it drags on the ground), and one 2 inch rip next to one of the seams near the end of the train – things I didn’t really notice until I was already at the con in the dress. A kind dealer loaned me his knife to cut off the worst of the fraying!
Wig:
The wig is an Arda Arwen, originally bought for my Edith (Crimson Peak) costume.
Accessories:
Crown is from my white Arwen costume, ring is still that same toy Nenya ring my cousin gave me ages and ages ago!
History: I’ll probably do a photoshoot with this soon but I’ll likely not wear it again! It was just a fun thing. Maybe one day I’ll actually do a legit Galadriel costume.
