First up I have to give a big shout out to Dawn Bright’s write-up on this costume on the Rebel Legion forums. That research was instrumental to us making this costume and please go over and check that out if you are interested in this costume!

Sweater:
For the sweater, I started with the basic tunic pattern from the above Simplicity pattern, and edited the size and shape in a mock-up until he was happy with how it looked. Then used that mock-up as my pattern for the real fabric.

The fabric we chose was a boucle fabric from etsy; when it arrived it was more of a cool charcoal grey then the warmer tone it had looked online, which was disappointing. I did throw it in some dye which helped warm it up SLIGHTLY but it still wasn’t exactly what I wanted. We decided to go ahead with it and in the end I feel like it looked pretty good.

I tried to finish every seam on the interior to avoid any fraying or this fabric just coming apart since it was a very loose-weave. It has an attached hood and 2 snap closures at the neck.

Jacket:
For the jacket, I started out with the men’s costume jacket pattern above and again did a full mock-up out of scrap fabric to get the sizing and shape he wanted. I cut the 2 front panels extra wide to get the draped look in the front.

Then the hard part – the fabric. I had initially wanted to find a pleather/vinyl/faux leather option that we could order yardage of, but everything we found just looked too fake and plastic-y. So finally we just found a leather supplier and bought a bunch of mid-sized hides of a leather look he liked. I had to split my pattern pieces into a bunch of smaller pieces to make it work, but overall it was worth it because I think that jacket looks great.

I did end up having to paint the interior front edge of jacket – where the wrong side is visible because of the drape. The wrong size of the leather was just very RED and looked weird, so I painted it down to be more de-saturated and in line with the other tones of the costume.

Poncho:
I made the poncho entirely off Dawn Bright’s notes and sketches as noted above. It was fantastic for constructing this – I did do one mock-up to make sure I understood it, then dove into the real thing and finished it in about a day.

For the fabric we looked at waxed cotton and decided it too pricey for us – especially after having to go real leather for the jacket – so we bought an outdoor cotton canvas fabric and Chase decided to wax it himself instead. I got the poncho constructed, then he heated up the wax and applied it (it smelled REALLY good). The depth it added to the fabric was great, it looks fantastic in photos.

Accessories:
He made the belt and added the belt buckle — the glove he bought on amazon and painted, because I refuse to make gloves.

The pants were pajama pants bought on amazon and dyed darker. The boots were boots he already had, and I made boot covers for them for the puttee wraps. I did not want to actually wrap his legs everytime he wore this, so I made boot covers out of the leftover cotton canvas from his poncho and added strips of a brown knit to it to recreate the wrapped look. They velcro closed in the back.

One nitpick I have is that his boots were a different tone of brown than everything else. Maybe replace them in the future.

History: Well I’d say I’m excited for him to wear this again except he shaved off his beard as soon as we got home from Dragoncon, so who knows when that will be.
