Wonder Woman – DC Comics (Ame-Comi)
Made for: Dragoncon 2008
Background: I loooved this alternate take on the WW costume.
Journal Entries: Read more at my Ame-Comi Wonder Woman tag
Patterns Used:
McCalls 3636 (possibly – altered)
Bodice:
I ordered a hide of really lovely red leather for the top – I built the whole thing around a bra, and changed the back so it would lace up instead of just being the straps across. I think I may have used the above pattern as a starting off point, but really not sure.
Skirt:
For the skirt I bought some blue china silk and some iron-on applique stars. The skirt is two layers of the china silk and fastens around the hips. The gold design at the bottom I did in leftover gold leather from Kingdom Come the year before.
Armor:
My husband made my shinguards and shoulder piece pretty early on – they’re made of plastic and I love them. We farmed out the chest piece/side pieces and belt, along with some pieces for one of my husband’s costumes. The weekend before the con, we find out the guy making them for us is not going to get it done in time. We had to brainstorm to attempt to salvage these two costumes we’d already done a ton of work on. We ended up using wet-formed leather for my Wonder Woman pieces – it’s not 100% the way I wanted, but at least I got to wear my costume! We painted them gold and glued them into place on the bodice.
Weapons:
The sword and shield my husband also made – the sword in particular was made of foam, coated and painted, and the eagles he sculpted and cast. The shield is layers of plastic. I love these pieces also!
Wig:
The wig was made of two black wigs – The first one I teased the sides and pinned in place, as well as adding some foam for shape & height to the top. The ponytail I made by starting with a foam base, and sewing the second wig around it.
Accessories:
The shoes were bought online and repainted the match the rest of my gold, and the wing-spurs were made of foam and glued in place. The tiara was made of plastic, it ties on around my head under the wig.
History: This is a beast to wear due to the weight of the wig, my hands full with the props, and the spurred shoes, but I do love it despite the obstacles we had to overcome to bring it to fruition.
