Shadowcat – X-Men (Blue 80’s Uniform)

Made for: Dragoncon 2002

Background: For my first DragonCon I really wanted to show off my love for comic books, especially X-Men. I picked Shadowcat, one of my favourites since I was a kid, and decided to go with her blue outfit since I figured it was the most recognizable.

Patterns Used:
Simplicity 8855

Top/Bottoms:

The swimsuit bottoms I bought locally and took with me to the fabric store to match to a cotton to make the top with. Used a peasant blouse pattern, just altered for the bottom to shorten it and add the waist tie, and also for the size of the collar.

Mask:

The mask was fun to make. I heated up some friendly plastic and formed it to my face, then covered it in my left-over blue cotton, and added ribbons so I could tie it on behind my hair. It’s not the most elegant thing, but it does fit my face very well. It took about 20 years but the mask finally broke 🙁 At least when I rewore this in 2013, I replaced it with a latex mask, so I’m glad it wasn’t my only mask at that point.

Accessories:

I bought the gloves, tights, the boots – the tights came from welovecolors.com and the boots from ebay.

History:

I brought this back to Dragoncon the next year also, to wear with my cousin as Jubilee, and wore it once more for a photoshoot several years later – and it finally revisited Dragoncon in 2013, with a brand new mask, tights and some other updates! As of 2025 the original mask crumbled, but everything else is still in good shape, which makes me happy!
