Queen Hippolyta – Wonder Woman

Made for: MidSouthCon 2011

Background: Totally fell in love with this costume. Started it in January, got it done “enough” to wear to MidSouthCon, and finished some stuff off for Dragoncon.

Bodice:

The bodice I made out of black cotton and spiral steel boning. I made the outer layer of the bodice out of silver leather, and hand-stitched it onto the base black bodice. I didn’t have a lot of the leather, so I had to really figure out how to cut the bodice pieces out so I would have enough. For the designs on the bodice, I went through 3 different gameplans before I finally just painted the designs on. After debuting at MidSouthCon, I went back and embroidered over them. I also had to add more silver to the top of the bodice, since the chestpiece was not as wide as I expected and I had a gap where the black bodice showed. I finished the edge in gold leather, and made a belt out of gold leather – it’s attached to the bodice.

Cape/Waist Wrap/Halter top:

The cape I just draped and hemmed – pretty simple. The halter top I made of red chiffon, with an elastic waistband. The “wrap” was just a square of red chiffon, trimmed with ribbon I found online.

Skirt:

For the skirt, I cut each piece out of leather and dyed them. I punched holes at the top of each piece so that I could sew them onto a waistband I made (out of heavy vinyl, to support the weight of the skirt – it snaps up the back). I did the designs at the bottom with gold and silver leather pieces, painted wooden stars, and I painted the designs onto the silver. This is one area I’d love to update one day – some 3d printed stars with more dimensionality and clean up the painted leather.

Sandals:

The sandals I bought online and added some pieces to; I took some of my gold leather belting and made a piece that looked “laced up” in the front.

Jewelry:

The brooch for the cape was a found piece I repainted, and the necklace was bits and pieces I bought at Hobby Lobby and put together.

Armor:
The chestpiece, shoulder eagles and gauntlets my husband sculpted and cast in resin, and painted gold. The tiara was made from my face cast, out of plastic. Before Dragoncon he remade the chestpiece, and added some detail to the tiara.

Wig:

The wig is a cosworx wig (which I love, it’s so soft!), with a ponytail added.

History:

I looove this costume. I’ve worn it to a couple more Dragoncons and need to do a photoshoot one day.
