Jean Grey – X-Men (Marvel Girl)
Made for: Dragoncon 2009
Background: Since we had the form we’d made for my Huntress mask, I thought I’d take advantage of it and reuse it š This was a fun, simple little project! (And a nice break from working on Anne Boleyn.)

Patterns Used:
Kwik Sew 2004
Dress:
I made the dress using an ice-skating leotard pattern, out of green spandex. It’s also lined in the same fabric through the torso – skirt and sleeves are just one layer, because I just baaarely had enough fabric to get this dress out of it all. I had to add a seam to the skirt but other than that and adding the upper lining, no changes from the actual pattern.
Boots:
I made boot covers for a pair of boots I already had, out of yellow spandex. They’re sewn in place onto the top edge of boot, and I’ve since reused these for my Wasp costume as well. (And as of 2020, the faux leather these boots were made of is falling apart – and while it’s not visible because of the yellow boot covers I made, they manage to stain my socks every time I wear them. Ew!)
Mask:
My husband made the mask for me, same as my Huntress mask – vac-formed plastic over my headcast, and painted. I glued ribbons to each side that I can tie and pin on before putting my wig on, and I usually also stick one piece of toupee tape on the forehead just to make sure it doesn’t move around. But these masks are so well fitted to my face that it really doesn’t need that.
Accessories:
I used my Rogue gloves and made cuffs for them (interfacing and yellow spandex) that just slide on on top of the existing gloves. I bought a belt and covered it in fabric and the belt buckle I bought online. The wig was my Dark Phoenix wig. (I had wanted a new one for this, but still haven’t gotten one!)
AND as of 2018 I FINALLY added the new wig!! I did my Love Shack Kate costume that year and was like… hey, wait I actually have my 60s-esque red wig I’ve always wanted for Marvel Girl. I haven’t taken any new photos in it yet – I plan to eventually – but I did wear it to Dragoncon with the new wig that year and also to MCX to meet Chris Claremont!
History:
It was a simple, comfy costume š And proof that even old costumes can find a new life years later.

Please note that none of these costumes are for sale! This is my personal portfolio.
