Huntress – Birds of Prey (Bruce Timm style)
Made for: Superman Celebration 2009
Background: I’d had some Bruce Timm art of Huntress saved in my “Costume Possibilities” folder for a while, and finally had the chance to do it.

Patterns Used: None
Leotard:
I bought the purple knit fabric online with the intention of dyeing darker, but once I saw it in person, I liked the tone of it so I decided to leave it. I made a couple of mockups of the suit with leftover spandex from other projects — I just used another leotard as a base to get the right shape for cutting the pieces out, and once I had the mockup pretty close I used that as a pattern for my real fabric. The suit is self-lined, and I added the white trim, made of white spandex material.
Cape:
The cape I also made without a pattern, it snaps closed at the neck in the back. I originally sewed on some velcro in the front to keep the center vertical stripes lined up, but didn’t like how it looked so I removed it. All of the white trim I made out of white spandex. This is what took the longest for this project, was cutting out all of the giant strips of white fabric neatly, piecing them together and then carefully sewing them on, I didn’t realize how that big that cape was until I started having to trim it LOL
Accessories:
The boots I bought online and made boot covers for out of my purple fabric. The belt was a belt blank dyed lavender, it snaps in the back. The belt accessories were all just random pieces found in the junk drawer that were painted and attached. The armbands and legbands my husband made using resin pieces, painted and attached to elastic. The crossbow was bought online and taken apart (to not be functional), and for the gloves, I made the upper section, then bought a pair of wrist-length gloves on ebay and dyed them to match (so I could take off just the hand section instead of the whole contraption if I needed to. Also I did not feel like making gloves!)
Mask:
We made a cast of my face, which was interesting. Once that was done, we vac-formed a piece of plastic around it, cut out the shape of the mask, and painted it. It’s nice and lightweight, I like it! I glued ribbons to either side to pin under my wig just to help keep it in place, but it’s so fitted to myself it doesn’t need much.
History:
I’ve only worn this a couple of times, because I really want to go back and re-line the cape in a darker purple one day… so I keep putting off rewearing this until I finally get to doing that.
(As of 2025 that still hasn’t happened and honestly I forgot about that idea until re-reading this to update it LOL)
