Taking a break on the sleeves

Last night I got the bodice finished up, and finally got to try everything on: Buuut once I had it all on, I realized that the bodice is too long on me, and too pointy. So at lunch today I'm going to take it part, tonight I'll shorten it and put it back together. Hopefully that won't take long; it just depends on it this picky fabric will work with ...

The best laid schemes of mice and men…

Well my grand plans of finishing Anne and working on all kinds of things over my 3 day weekend went bust. I started out strong on Thursday night, finishing my underskirt with the exception of a hook and eye at the waist. I also discovered the cause of the problem with my old hoopskirt and fixed it. (Basically, when I first got that hoopskirt in 2007 to wear under Belle, it had ...

Dragoncon Stories: That Time I Was Green and it Sucked

This is the last story I can think of from our first Dragoncon; my body paint issue. I've talked about it before, but here it goes again. So I'd been wanting to do my Ocha costume for a while by that point. I finally decided to dig in and do it for Dragoncon, since it seemed a better fit for that con than the anime cons I'd previously been going ...

FAQ Friday: Con Prep!

Today's question is... What's your con prep consist of? It's almost that time to start prepping for DragonCon! By that, I don't mean working on new costumes - I'm already doing that - but preparing everything ELSE for the con. Here's what I do, generally for DragonCon since that's the biggest - for smaller cons these ideas are tweaked or not needed, but take from this what you will for ...

Underskirt

Last night! Back to work on Anne! I finished getting the underskirt put together, got the front piece cut out and sewn in, and finished the interior edges. Tonight I've got to hem it, then pleat and finish the top edge. Then I can mark that off my list. Friday I'll be all over the place working on different stuff. Will probably start the inner sleeve mock-up - and possibly ...

Dragoncon Stories: That Time We Went Through the Photo Gauntlet

Today I'm going to tell yall about the photo gauntlet. Dragoncon 2002's masquerade was not my first costume contest, but as it was my first Dragoncon, it was my first time participating in their masquerade. Ash and I signed up just for fun, because - back then, we ALWAYS did some kind of costume contest (we'd done Urd and Skuld in the hall costume contest at Otakon just a couple ...

post-weekend

Had a nice weekend at my grandparent's. Shopped, ate, embroidered, napped, got rained on, fed a stray cat. I bought some decorative stuff for Anne but didn't find trim I liked yet for the top. Bought some fabric, fabric paint, some new scissors, etc. I've decided what to do on the Anne skirt seams. I'm going to redo 3 of them, instead of all - I know I should redo all ...

FAQ Friday: San Diego Comic Con

Today's question is... Will you be at San Diego Comic Con this year? I've kinda touched on this in the past, but I get this question a lot so I thought I'd dedicate a post to it. The basic answer is no, sadly, I will not be at San Diego Comic Con this year, or probably at any point ever again. We went from 2004-2006, which seems like so long ...

Anne update for today

I've been having trouble with the seams on the skirt puckering. I sewed the skirt seams like I normally do satin and they looked - fine. Not fantastic, but very minimal puckering. Passable. I finished the interior seams same way as I did on the bodice and the puckering went up by about 50%. Now they don't look so good. I tried all kinds of little tricks to help, but nothing ...

Thoughts on a short year

Last year I only made 6 costumes. That's the lowest amount since I started this hobby. Even the year we bought a house and we needed to save money I made more costumes (9). The only years lower are 2000 and 1999 - because I only made 1 each of those years. After realizing this and thinking about it, I realized it's probably due to three things: 1. Disney. I didn't make any costumes earlier in ...
